This might be one of the ballsiest things Aiden ever does and it does not go well. In fact, he's very lucky it didn't end up worse... (Part of the whole âgetting Aiden legitimate/legal statusâ arc)
cw: implied beating, mention of human trafficking (bbu), caretaker being a little stern because of worry, whumpee struggling with some conditioning, internalized ableism, lots of victim self-blame, poor sense of self-preservation, etc.

Aiden closes his eyes and pulls in another breath of cool night air, filling his lungs despite the pain in his ribs. At the end of a long, controlled exhale, the door is still staring back at him.Â
He switches the keys to his other hand, pulls out the right one for the dozenth time. Itâs been more than five minutes, maybe even more than ten minutes. He has to go in. At this rate, he risks Leo finding him out here hesitating which will only make things worse.Â
He tugs his hood as low as it will go and opens the door.Â
Leo cuts off midsentence, rushing from the kitchen and stopping as soon as he sees Aiden.Â
âHeâs here,â Leo says into the phone, âThank God. Iâll call you later.â He falls into a seat on the couch and drops his head into his hands. âJesus,â he says to himself, followed by a few rounds of haggard breaths that tighten Aidenâs chest.Â
Aiden quietly replaces Leoâs car keys on the hook and toes off his boots. His hands shake even more than usual as he imagines the glare Leoâs staring into his back but when he turns around Leo hasnât moved.Â
All the lights are on, nowhere to hide. The house is immaculate, like maybe this is the first time Leo sat down since realizing he was gone. Guilt twists in his stomach.Â
Leo still hasnât moved. A shower wonât improve his fate but it will at least delay the inevitable. He grips the banister.Â
âWhere do you think youâre going?âÂ
His stomach drops. âIââ
Leo lifts his head. âGet in here.âÂ
Aiden cringes, sucking in a shallow breath as he slinks into the living room, trying not to limp.Â
Leo squints up at him trying to see his face under the hood. âWell?â
âIâm sorry,â he says, hanging his head. âIââ
âI donât want to hear that,â Leo says, voice hollow. Even his expression is flat, tired, exhausted by what Aiden put him through. All for nothing. âI want you to tell me where the fuck youâve been for the last four hours. In the middle of the night. With my car. And no license or ID to speak of.âÂ
He flinches. âIâIââ The words wonât come. What does surface are tears because he feels so, so stupid for ever thinking his plan would work.Â
âAiden?â Now thereâs worry in his tone, reaching down Aidenâs throat to twist his stomach further. Leo stands. âLook at me, are you okay?âÂ
He swallows a sob and nods.Â
âAiden.â Itâs as much an admonishment as an accusation.Â
âIâm sorry,â he whispers. Any louder and heâll be crying. Itâs already half whimpered.Â
Leo sighs. The sound of his disappointment makes Aiden want to fall to his knees. Leo reaches out slowly, like heâs trying not to spook a frightened animal and pushes back the hood. His breath catches audibly and he covers his mouth with his hands at the sight of Aidenâs busted face.Â
Aiden breaks, dropping to his knees with a sob.Â
Leo catches his arms and follows him down, sitting on the edge of the couch again. âAidenââ
âMmmâsorry. Mmmâso⌠s-s-sorry,â he cries. âI-I mmmâwas, so, s-s-stupid.âÂ
âEasy, easy.â Leo holds him by the shoulder and brings his other hand to his chin. He gently turns his head to one side and then the other, eyes still wide with shock.Â
His broken lip throbs, left eye swelling shut. He did what he could with some hand wipes in the car but heâs pretty sure the cut on his forehead is going to need stitches if he doesnât want yet another disfiguring scar.Â
âAre youâŚhurt in any other way?â
âNo.â He doesnât know if heâd be able to tell Leo even if it had come to that.Â
âDid anyone follow you?â
He shakes his head, wanting nothing more than to lean into Leoâs hand on his chin, collapse into his lap.Â
âDo you think they knew your history?âÂ
You mean what I am? He shakes his head again. By some miracle, they hadnât made that inch long leap.Â
Leo only looks infinitesimally relieved. Aiden bites back a whimper as Leo surveys his face again, frowning. He stiffens when Leo pulls him to his feet.Â
But all he does is pull Aiden into his arms. âGod, I could kill you. I was so worried.âÂ
âIâm sorry,â he says into Leoâs shoulder.Â
Leo pulls him closer, squeezing the back of his neck. Aiden ignores the pain in his face and sinks into Leoâs chest, letting out a shaky exhale.Â
Too soon, Leo herds him into the kitchen and onto a stool. He feels unsteady now, without Leoâs arms around him.Â
âIâm getting you some ice and youâre going to tell me what happened.â
âYessir.âÂ
Leo turns around to level him with a look.Â
Aiden wilts. âSorry.âÂ
âSeems to be a lot of that going around.âÂ
He swallows.Â
Leo gets the ice pack and fills a glass of water for him. âWould you take some ibuprofen?âÂ
âYes,â he says, too quickly.Â
Leo narrows his eyes. âBecause it hurts that much or because youâre placating me?âÂ
âCanât-canât it be⌠mmmâboth?âÂ
âYeah, sure,â Leo says, tone biting. âIs it?âÂ
He hangs his head. Admits in a whisper, âNo.âÂ
Leo sighs. âNormally, I wouldnât let you make this choice based on the fact that you think it might earn you some good willâŚâ Aidenâs cheeks burn but he forces himself to hold Leoâs gaze. âThat said, I really donât like the look of the swelling around your eye. And Delia will probably come up with more reasons why itâs necessary.âÂ
Aiden nods.Â
âCan I convince you to eat something with it? Maybe drink a glass of juice?âÂ
He looks at his hands to hide his face.Â
âI donât even have to try, do I?â Leo asks.
He shakes his head, eyes down. The knuckles on his right hand are raw from his feeble attempts to fight back. Â
âGod,â Leo swears under his breath and Aiden flinches.Â
âIâŚfucked up,â he whispers, another weak defense.Â
Leo sighs. âThat doesnât mean we have to go back to this.â
âI-I donâtâ I canâtââ He blinks back tears. Crying will only make this worse. Leo already thinks heâs pathetic. Hates when he regresses to a spineless pet. âIf youâyouâre not-not⌠going toâŚuhmâŚâ He doesnât think he can even say it. Half because he knows it would never happen and half because of the hard look in Leoâs eyes, confirming he doesnât have to speak the unthinkable out loud. âIf I donâtâdonât⌠How-how will you, you, mmmâmmmâŚâ Heâs perilously close to crying. Fucking inarticulateâ
âHey, comâere.â Leo leans across the island and reaches for his hands. He surrenders them, biting his bottom lip to stop himself from just apologizing again. Leo rubs his thumb over the back of his hand. âListen to me. I know you know this but Iâm gonna say it anyway: You donât have to do anything to earn my forgiveness.âÂ
He searches Leoâs eyes, their familiar brown. The creases at the corners that deepen when he smiles are shallow now.Â
âI wasâit wasâso⌠mmmâstupid.âÂ
âI bet. But I donât care.âÂ
Heâs too shaken to wait very long for the other shoe to drop. âI donâtâŚâ
Leo holds both of his hands in one of his and lifts the other to Aidenâs cheek. âI know. And I have to be more patient with you while you learn to trust that.âÂ
âMâsorry,â he whispers.Â
âShhh.â Leo brushes an escaped tear off his cheek with his thumb and Aiden swallows a sob. âHow about we agree that you take the ibuprofen and have a snack because you need it and no other reason?âÂ
Aiden nods. Maybe one day heâll actually be worthy of all the second chances Leo gives him.Â
It takes him three tries to choke down two ibuprofen. He doesnât doubt that the pills are what Leo says they are. He can even read the bottle. Recognizes the familiar greenish tint to the liquid capsules. His body isnât on the same page, even as his ribs ache with every gag and cough.Â
Leo keeps a hand on Aiden's back while he calls Delia. Aiden diligently eats his granola bar, chasing it with a glass of orange juice and trying to distract himself from thinking ahead to her visit with the warmth of Leoâs touch. Â
âSheâs off in a half an hour and then sheâll head over.âÂ
Leo puts Aidenâs empty glass in the dishwasher. He lifts the whole stack of neatly folded kitchen towels off the top shelf of the cabinet to pick a dark green one from the middle. Restacks the rest and replaces them before wrapping the chosen towel around the ice pack. âCome on, letâs sit on the couch and you can tell me what happened.âÂ
He keeps his hands in his pocket to hide their shaking, tucking his feet up under him on the couch. Leo gingerly holds the ice pack to his busted face.Â
Aiden swallows the lump that rises in his throat.Â
âHey, look at me.â Leo waits. âI just want to know what happened. Youâre still not going to be in trouble.âÂ
âI-I should⌠be. You donâtâyou donât, mmmâknow howâŚs-s-stupid it was.â
âEasy, sweetheart.â Leo takes a deliberate breath, waits for Aiden to do the same. âJust start at the beginning.âÂ
He looks at his lap, tears brim in his eyes again. âI justâI just⌠mmmâwanted to get, uhm, to get your⌠mmmâmoney⌠back,â he whispers.Â
Leo lets the ice pack fall. âTell me you didnât try to find that scamming dirt bag again.âÂ
âNo, no.â Much stupider than that. âI-I⌠mmmâmade an, um, an ad.âÂ
Leo narrows his eyes. âWhat do you mean?âÂ
âUhmâŚfor-for aâŚan, umm, a⌠mmmâcompanion.âÂ
âAiden.âÂ
It knocks the wind right out of him, hearing Leo say his name in that tone. He shrinks back against the couch. Leo didnât even have to raise his voice.Â
âAre you serious?âÂ
He nods, shoulders up to his ears.Â
âJesus. Fuck. Do you have any ideaââ Leo closes his eyes and takes a deep breath. âSorry, I canâtâ the thought of what could have happenedâŚâÂ
âMmâokay,â he whispers, guilt clawing its way up his throat.Â
âNo. No, youâre not,â Leo snaps.Â
He doesnât know why heâs defending himself when Leo is right.Â
It could have been awful. He could be chained in a basement right now or headed back to WRU. Never seeing Leo again. It could have ended his life.Â
âIâm, Iâmmmâhere,â he insists, half to himself. Â
âYeah, by the skin of your teeth.â Leo gets up and paces away. Aiden holds his breath when he turns back. âGod. How could you be so impulsive? When is it going to get through to you how devastated I would be if anything happened to you? If you hadnât made it home?âÂ
Aiden blinks up at him. âI-IââÂ
âDo you have any idea what that would be like for me? Trying to get on with my life if you were gone?â He presses the heels of his hands against his temples. Aidenâs chest feels tight. âCanât you see how much you matter to me? Way more than five fucking grand, I can tell you that much.âÂ
He paces to the window and stands there seething.Â
Aiden bites his bottom lip to stop it from trembling. Every part of him is shaking now, a storm of guilt and regret and too many other things to pick out by name, pushing him to the edge.Â
âL-Leo?âÂ
He spins and Aiden flinches, hands twitching up defensively before he can stop them.Â
âFuck,â Leo breathes as the tears start falling from Aidenâs eyes. Aiden covers his face with his hands.Â
Leo drops to his knees in front of him. âComâere, baby. Iâm sorry.â He pulls Aiden into his arms. Aiden sobs against his chest.Â
He feels it all again, in the safety of Leoâs arms. A fist in his sweatshirt. The slam of his back meeting the pavement. Boots against his ribs. Hands around his neck. âI-I was so, so⌠mmmâscared.âÂ
âMe too.â Leo rubs the back of his neck. âPromise me youâll never pull something like that again.âÂ
He sniffles. âI⌠mmmâpromise.âÂ
Leo holds him until he stops crying. Even then, keeps Aiden under his arm while he holds the ice pack to his cheek. âYouâre going to tell Delia everywhere else they hit you so she can make sure you donât have any internal bleeding.â
He nods. âI-I had itâI had the-the mmmâmoney. It almost⌠mmmâworked.â He just wasnât fast enough.Â
âAiden. Listen to me. I donât care about the money.â Leo looks into his eyes, one at a time to make sure heâs hearing him. âWeâre going to find another way to get you an ID. And by âweâ I mean me and Delia. Alright? None of this is for you to try to fix.âÂ
âMm.âÂ
Leo thumbs his chin gently. âNow you mumble at me like a teenager?âÂ
âYessir,â he amends, biting his lips together.Â
âGod.â Leo rolls his eyes and pulls Aiden against his chest, pressing a chaste kiss to the top of his head. âYouâre grounded for a million years. Iâm never letting you out of my sight again.â
Heâs joking but Aidenâs heart still rushes in his chest. He doesnât want to be alone anytime soon either.Â
