Enshitification of Youtube - no Playback Speed
I hate that word, but it is fact.
If you are not aware, it seems Youtube is attempting to remove the very basic, normal, playback speed controls from your videos in an attempt to coerce you to pay them by buying premium.
Some idiots report 'turning off adblock' fixes this, but that's bullshit because you do not turn off adblock for anything. That allows viruses, spam, and trojan horses to be loaded onto your pages, embedded in intrusive ads. Do not do this. This is a SECURITY RISK, and even the federal government, as fucked as it is, recognizes this basic fact.
Actual solutions for computer:
Reload the page (F5). This seems to work for now.
Install an extension for changing video speeds. Video speed encoding is native to the web browser and has nothing to do with the video or Youtube itself, meaning you can bypass any absent controls with the right extension. I just added THIS ONE, but am not vouching for performance on other systems. There is now a speed icon in the upper left of my video that lets me change the speed.
Potential solutions for Phone Apps:
Stop fucking updating your damn app every time it wants you to update. It's completely unnecessary. Keeping an older version may allow you access to normal controls like playback speed for a time.
Use the Firefox app to log into your account and watch videos. The Firefox app allows extensions, and you can add things like adblockers, popup blockers and other normal quality of life features. Chrome does not allow normal quality of life extensions on the app, and I have no idea why. Use Firefox or another alternative.
