If I could invent anything, it would be a breathable, washable sleeve you can slip onto your fingers to keep you from picking them. I’m a compulsive skin picker and destroy my cuticles on the daily. The only current way to prevent this is with band-aids, which are expensive to buy in bulk, get nasty and/or destroyed within 12 hours, and cannot get wet, making hand washing difficult in the bathroom. Not to mention the pain of trying to cook or clean dishes wearing them.
It amazes me that there is not a product I can find that fixes this problem. We live in an era where your refrigerator can order asparagus for you, and I still can’t find a simple silicone sheath or something to attach to my thumbs to prevent me from picking at them until they heal?
Only drawing works as a reliable distraction, and a lot of sites are like “keep your hands busy!” but that doesn’t exactly work when you’re stuck at a desk for 8 hours.
Does anyone know of any products that serve the same function as band-aids but are re-usable/washable?
Just as an FYI: anyone that has a picking problem (i.e. picking your skin, nails, etc), if you want to stop, try acrylic nails. they're extremely dull and don't allow for picking, all while looking fabulous! if you can't afford to get them at a salon, you can get cheap ones at Walmart! they've helped my picking a lot

Thanks for the tip anon!
Dermatillomania: Hey, you ever noticed you have blackheads on your chest?
Me: ...Fuck.
Dermatillomania: :)
I'd just given up and accepted my dermatillomania as something I can't change, but you know what? Screw that. I'm gonna fight this thing. I want the scabs to heal, I want the scars to fade, I want the hair to grow back.
I don't want to hide anymore, so I'm gonna fight.

i think im a compulsive picker... how can i get myself to stop?
Lex says:
I manage compulsive picking as well, and though I haven’t been able to stop it completely, I have reduced it some. Most of my picking is limited to my hands and the areas around my nails, so what helped me the most was starting to paint my nails. It gives me the same sense of control that I feel like I get from picking, but it’s not picking. It also helps in that it makes my nails look pretty and makes me want to preserve that more! I also make sure to cut any sort of hang-nails or hang-skin with small nail scissors so that I will have less of an ability to pick.Â
I also got the advice that whenever I felt the urge to pick, I should just instead put lotion on my hands to keep them busy. That didn’t help me a ton mostly because I wasn’t dedicated enough to carry the lotion with me everywhere, but it might be something for you to try!
I put this scar fading gel on my back every night but without fail I'll pick at the existing scabs/acne there every day.
Ok, I've made a decision. If I can stop picking at the scabs on my head, once they heal I can dye the ends of my hair red. Not before. Let's see if this works.
