No-one ever knows what to expect from the ritual of adulthood before it happens. We know that we are separated, the boys from the girls. We know that what happens is very important. And we know that sometimes, it changes people in a way thatâs impossible to explain.
And of course, we know that part of the ritual is cutting off our braids. All the little girls envy the girls with their short hair, newly made women, and I suppose the boys do, too. Iâve seen new-made men posing and preening just as much as the girls do, showing off to the younger boys whose braids are still long.
For some, itâs the only time in their lives that they cut their hair. Others go back again, at some important time. When someone dies, sometimes, or when a child is coming. Times with meaning for them.
I remember how excited I was, when all the girls and boys born in that year were gathered together on midsummer day. There was feasting, and dancing, and casting of bones and reading of fortunes. Then, at sunset, we were divided, the girls from the boys, and led up into the hills.
They led us into a cave, and a wise woman wrapped in a white shawl sat and explained the womenâs mysteries to us. That was, for me, something of a let-down. I already knew most of it, from my mother and sisters, and helping with animals on the farm. The woman saw me yawn, and smiled, showing only a few worn teeth. âYou already know,â she said, in her cracked old voice. âYes, many of you already know. But some will not, and you must all know before you go on. For to truly understand what is asked of you there, you must understand the cycle of life and death.â
When she was done, and had answered all the questions the girls had who hadnât known, she brought us together and led us through a low passage that was as dark as the darkest night. âEach girl, take hold of the hand of the girl before and the girl behind,â she said firmly, taking the hand of the first girl in line. âWalk together in trust, and be not afraid.â
It was strange, that walk in the darkness. Frightening, mysterious, and yet reassuring too, to feel the hands of my friends clasped in mine, to know we made a chain of trust behind our guide. It seemed to go on for a long time, and yet it couldnât have been too long, for the hill wasnât so large, and we came out in a great cavern still inside it. And what we saw there⊠that more than made up for the disappointing beginning.
Every inch of the walls, every inch, was covered in complex weavings. Some were patterns â spirals, knots, circles or intersecting lines, and even I could feel the power in them. There was a great circle of stones in the center, like a huge well, and over that was stretched layer after layer of nets and spell-weavings, held down by pegs driven into the earthen floor. And every single one of them was made of hair.
I saw every colour in the weavings, from as black as my auntâs crow-wing hair to the snow-white of age to the near-white blonde of some children. Red and brown, too, and all shades between. This was why our hair was cut. For this great, secret magic.
I was so captivated by the weavings that I didnât realize the boys had joined us until one of them said what I was thinking. âThis is why our braids are cut off,â he said quietly. âTo make these?â
âYes,â one of the white-garbed wise-women said. There were several of them here, some old, some young. It was a middle-aged one, with broad grey streaks in her brown hair, who spoke now. She stood before a square, white altar-stone, with candles set in the four corners and a knife lying in the center beside a bowl of what looked like water. âThis is the shield of our land. The great magic that protects us from both evil below,â she pointed to the huge well, âand evil outside. This is the wall that shields us, and keeps us safe.â She beckoned the boy who had spoken forward, and he approached her nervously. âAnd this is the secret of which you must never speak, outside this place, so that no whisper may ever reach our enemies on this plane or the other. Understand, to speak of it is utterly forbidden, and if you do, you will die.âÂ
She took up the blade, then, sharp and gleaming, and the boy stepped back, but she only took his hand and pricked his finger so that a single drop of blood welled onto the blade. Then she moved behind him, and cut through his braid with the knife, so his hair fell loose just above his shoulders. Then, ceremoniously, she handed him the braid, laying it across both his hands. âNow,â she said, and though she spoke quite softly, the room was so silent that her voice seemed to echo. âLook within yourself, and find what part within yourself you are willing to give up, what power of yours can go into this hair, and be used to protect you and all your people. When you have found it, lay the hair on the altar. If you choose not to make the sacrifice, hand the hair to me. The choice is yours, to be made freely.â She looked out at the rest of us. âAll of you are free to choose,â she said gently. âWe compel no-one. We only ask that you give a little of yourselves, to serve all, and what you give you may choose, and if you choose to give nothing, that you are free to do.â
The boy stood for what seemed like a long time, and then he sighed and laid the braid on the altar. âItâs done,â he said, and his voice was unsteady, as if he wanted to cry.
âThank you,â the woman said simply, and she laid a hand on his head in blessing, and then told him to stand on the other side of the altar.
She called up one after another, washing the knife in the bowl between each person, and each stood with his or her braid across his hands, making a choice, then laid the braid on the altar. Until Mari. She was a girl I didnât like much, but I felt sorry for her when she started to cry. âNo! No, I wonât!â she cried, stepping back and thrusting the braid towards the wise woman. âI wonât!â
âVery well,â the wise woman said calmly. âThat is your choice.â She turned, and dropped the braid into a bucket behind her. âGo and stand with the others, then.â
Mari took a step towards the group, then looked at the bucket. âWhat are you going to do with my hair?â she asked, sounding nervous but suspicious at the same time.
The wise woman shrugged. âThrow it away,â she said calmly. âItâs of no use.â
Mari bit her lip, and went to stand with the others, but her eyes didnât seem able to leave that bucket.
When it was my turn, I was shaking with nerves and excitement. I went to stand before her, had my finger pricked, and my braid cut through. My head felt so strange, with the curls coming loose, so light, and when she laid the braid over my hands I felt dizzy when I looked at it.
I cannot truly explain in words what happened then. I can only say that I knew, without knowing how I knew, that I could put some part of myself, my power, into my braid, and that the importance of what I gave up would determine the magical strength that hair would have when it was used. Â It could be anything. A talent, a memory, any part of myself.
I considered for a long moment, but Iâd already known what it would be. Iâd had time to think about it, while the others had their turns. Two years ago, sickness came to our village. I gave it my grief for my mother and my brother and sisters who died, the sorrow that had cut me like a knife within, the pain that had haunted me ever since. It was the strongest thing in me, the strongest thing I had to give.
I felt it go, and my body felt as light as my cropped head, all of a sudden. I hadnât forgotten them, or the love Iâd had for them, but the pain and weight of sorrow was all gone⊠and the hair across my palms felt much heavier. I laid it on the altar, and felt the hand on my head in blessing, and went to stand with the others.
No-one else refused, that year. Mari was still snuffling when we went out from the cave, all together, and walked back to the village. Dawn came, while we walked, and we were all tired and yawning.
Dern, one of my oldest friends, came to walk beside me. âWhat did you give up?â he whispered.
âWeâre not supposed to talk about it,â I whispered back.
âWeâre not supposed to talk about the ritual,â he countered. He looked sad, but a bit relieved too. âSo Iâll just say⊠I donât think Iâll play the drum anymore.â
That startled me. Dern had always been so good at drumming, playing so people could dance. âThat?â
He shrugged. âIt was just something I had a knack for. Iâll miss it, but⊠I didnât need it.â
I nodded slowly. âI think,â I said, looking up at the pale sky, and listening to the birds starting to sing, âthat I wonât be sad anymore.â
âThatâs good.â He took my hand and squeezed it. He knew how heavy my grief had weighed on me.
We never spoke of it again, any of us. But none of us felt quite the same about Mari, after that day. I understood now why sometimes one boy, or one girl, or two or three, would seem to draw away from the others after the ritual. They hadnât been willing to give something. They had kept their power to themselves, instead of making a sacrifice. It was hard not to feel different about someone, knowing that.
This valley has been peaceful and prosperous all my life. Free of the weight of my grief, I picked up the threads of my life again and became a hunter.
Ten years later, Mari went missing, vanished while she was out collecting mushrooms. All we hunters went looking for her, assuming she was lost or injured.
I found her, at dawn of the next morning, at the very edge of the great valley. She was sitting on a fallen tree, and she was crying.
I went over to her, sitting on the log beside her. âAre you all right?â
âNo.â She wiped her eyes on her sleeve. âNo, Iâm not all right. Iâve never been all right since the ritual, and you know that and now⊠now itâs worse.â
âWorse how?â
âBecauseâŠâ She swallowed hard, then stood. âCome. Iâll show you.â
She led me towards the top of the ridge. âI went over. I was going to leave and not come back. I couldnât stand it, knowing⊠knowing everyone knew. But there were⊠were men. They chased me, and I⊠ran back. They were laughing, and shouting threats, they said theyâdâŠâ She shuddered, and I put an arm around her shoulders. âBut then they crossed into the valley, andâŠâ She stopped, and pointed.
There were four of them, all dead. One had been cut into pieces, as if by fine wires. Another had been hanged from a tree. A third seemed to have fallen and broken his head open on a stone. The fourth looked untouched, though his eyes were wide open in terror and the earth showed where heâd kicked and flailed before he died. When I examined the body, though, I found that his mouth and throat were stuffed with handfuls of hair. Heâd been smothered with it.
There was more hair tangled around the ankles of the man whoâd fallen, and twisted into the rope that hung the one in the tree. While I examined them, I heard a trembling voice. âWhat happened to them?â
I looked around. Another man stood, just over the ridge. He was dirty, and looked as unsavoury as the dead men, but he also looked terrified. âI was behind them, when they⊠they all just died. I didnât see what did it, but they all died. Was it a demon?â
âThis valley is protected,â I said, choosing my words carefully. âTo enter here with ill intentions is⊠unwise.â
Then I turned my back on him, and went to Mari. She was crying again. âI wouldnât give,â she sobbed. âI was scared of losing part of myself, and I wouldnât give it up, and⊠and it protected me anyway. It saved me even though I wouldnât help.â
âOf course. When we all did it, we did it for everyone. Not just everyone who contributed.â
âBut no-one will ever forget that I didnât,â Mari moaned. âI wish I had, I do wish I had, but nowâŠâ
âSo go back.â I pulled her braid. âItâs been growing for ten years. Thatâs long enough to go back, and nearly dying in the woods is a good enough reason.â
She stared at me, and slowly touched her hair. âGo back?â she whispered.
âWhy not? People do.â
âPeople do,â she whispered. âI⊠thank you.â
âYouâre welcome. Letâs go home and get some sleep first, though.â
The next time I saw Mari, her hair didnât reach her shoulders, and her eyes were bright with relief. It was fear that had held her back, and it had weighed on her mind all that time. She was happy, after that.
Iâve given my hair three time. The second time was when my only child, born late, came healthy into the world. The third was when my wife died, and I came to the caverns to become a wise woman.
So you see, I understand how you feel. I know that for some itâs a hard choice, a frightening choice, one you canât make when youâre so young and unprepared. We all know that, thatâs why thereâs no scolding when someone refuses. Some people never do it, and it doesnât bother them. Itâs whatâs right for them. Others, like Mari, like you, it weighs on.
But itâs never too late. When youâre ready, when you know what it is you have to give and can give it freely, come back. Weâll be ready then, with the knife, and the blessing.
Only you can choose what you give to your people, and only you can know when or if itâs right to give it. But itâs never too late.
There, donât cry. Youâll know when itâs right.

Note:
The phrase âten thousand braids of human hairâ occurred to me, and I had to find a story to fit the title and the symbolism â what would make ten thousand people cut off their hair? What power would that hair have, and who would put it to use? Hair has great symbolic weight in many cultures, and magical significance as well. The braids had to mean something⊠and I knew that the choice to make the sacrifice had to be freely made, or it would taint everything. I hope you like how it came out.

The headcanon: Living in the sunless Demon Realm, demons donât naturally have freckles. They might have spots and stripes and tattoos and makeup and other demonic features, but most are unfamiliar with how sun exposure is actually the cause of skin freckling for humans and angels.
The boys might have seen freckles on prior exchange students from the Human Realm, but MC is the first one theyâve really cared to notice them on. And theyâre fading.
Since day one of their arrival, Lucifer has kept tabs on the health of MC. However, he doesnât intervene unless he believes that MC may be ill or in the way of harm.
MCâs been getting paler over the last couple of months and it has not escaped his notice.
He begins taking careful note of whether MC is getting enough vitamin D in their diet, going so far as to ensure that shared meals at the House of Lamentation are full of the nutrients their human needs to remain healthy. If MC seems down or out of it, theyâll promptly find themselves whisked off to get a prescription for vitamin supplements to make up for any deficiencies they might have from now living in the Demon Realm.
He remembers the adjustments he and his brothers had to go through after they fell. For most of them, it meant changing their diets, though Asmo in particular despaired over the loss of the spattering of freckles over across his nose and cheeks as he feared his beauty was fading.
It might not bring their freckles back, but heâll be damned if MC becomes unhealthy on his watch.
Luke is also looking a bit more pallid these days.
He might have mentioned something to Lord Diavolo about MC and the angels looking overly pale these days due to the lack of sufficient sun exposure theyâd normally have in their own realms. It was only coincidence that a trip was soon planned to spend some time in the sun at Lord Diavoloâs private island.
He might not say anything, but seeing MC happy and healthy is a source of Pride for him. Heâll admire from afar if they manage to get MCâs freckles back.
Mammon:
âYo, human! Whereâd all ya spots go?â
It took him a while to figure out what was changing, but being in charge of their human means he needs to notice these things!
He freaks out at first thinking it means that MC is getting sick. Even after explaining it to him, heâs a bit skeptical that it doesnât mean that MC is unwell. He knew that humans could have spots cuz heâs seen them during his time in the Human Realm, but he never knew it was because of the sun. Now that he thinks about it now, though, it makes sense with the changes some of the brothers went through after the Fall. And the little pipsqueak angel also seems to be significantly more pale.
He internalizes this for too long before finally mentioning something to Lucifer. âHey, maybe a trip out to that island would do them some good, yeah?â
Lucifer shot down a trip to the Human Realm just to go to the beachâŠbut heâd see about organising a group trip to the Demon Lordâs private beach.
Asmo:
âOh, darling, youâre looking so pale these days! Are you feeling alright??â
Asmoâs one of the first to notice the sun-kissed color of MCâs cheeks and freckles fading the longer theyâre in the Demon Realm.
It reminds him of part of his own transition after the Fall.
He drags MC to his room whenever he can to make sure that theyâre keeping up an acceptable skincare routine.
Thereâs a specialty spa he loves to go to because it has tanning booths. While normally scarce in the Demon Realm, they are popular in areas where Human Realm spa services and aesthetics are more on trend. He uses them to get just the right amount of sun-kissed glow and dainty flecks back to his skin.
Heâll suggest they go there sometime and might drop a hint that they even have tanning there, though heâd never pressure MC into using them.
If MC likes the suggestion, Asmo will want them both to make a routine of going together.
Heâll be overjoyed when MCâs cute freckles start making a return.
Asmo is one of the first to jump onboard for plans to go out to Lord Diavoloâs private island. Heâll never miss a good opportunity to get in some sunbathing (and pictures of him sunbathing for his Devilgram). Heâs one of the ones sure to remember sunscreen and insist on lathering up MC - itâs not sexy to get all red and burned from too much sun!
If MC is involved with Asmo, heâll lay sweet kisses all over them for each freckle.
Satan:
It was less that he noticed and more just that heâs aware that itâs something that happens with many humans and angels when they spend significant amounts of time staying in the Demon Realm.
Being born to the darkness of the Demon Realm, however, he did not realise the cause of the change being connected to the sun - or lack thereof.
âAh, thatâsâŠintriguing. Iâve never come across such a thing discussed in any of the books Iâve read about human anatomy. Is it painful to lose them?â
He scours books on skincare for humans and reads up on the effects of too much and too little sun exposure. There sadly isnât a whole lot written on this in the Demon Realm, yet.
Satan is the one that suggests that MC maybe should be seeing a doctor regularly during their stay to ensure that their health is being properly looked after. After all, the human health books advise that routine bloodwork can signal of issues developing long before outward appearances may reflect a problem.
If MC doesnât care of their freckles fading, then he doesnât care, either, though the little spots remind him of the spots that some cats have. They're cute.
Diavolo:
Is genuinely very concerned when he notices MCâs âspotsâ fading away.
Theyâre the first human exchange student that heâs become close enough with to notice such a thing happening.
He knows that many humans can have all kinds of spots; some many, some few; some dark, some light.
But he didnât know they could start fading away.
Does it mean their precious exchange student is ill??
He asks Barbatos to assist him in finding books that might provide the answer, but they donât have much luck. It seems to be a phenomenon little reported on within the Demon Realm.
He isnât sure how to approach it, so is just blunt about it one day when he and MC are enjoying some private time together, âI donât mean to alarm you, MCâŠbut I noticed that your spots donât appear to be quite as plentiful as when you first arrived here. Have you been feeling well?â
Is relieved when heâs told that itâs a normal thing to occur due to the lack of sunlight that the Demon Realm has, but is equally upset that heâs inadvertently been the cause of this. The health of his exchange student is one of his highest priorities while they are under his care.
Even if MC is getting sufficient nutrients from their diet, Diavolo is skeptical that their freckles fading isnât inherently a sign of bad health. He tells Lucifer that theyâll all vacation at his island over Spring Break.
Is disappointed that a few days in the sun wonât be enough to ensure that MCâs freckles will come back and not fade again. So that just means theyâll have to plan more sunny trips!
Maybe he should make a mini sun for MC.
Is skeptical that tanning beds are sufficient for the same desired effect but will confer with Asmo to find the best and safest options to explore with MC.
MCâs spots are one of his favorite features if theyâre involved with the Prince. Theyâre one of the cute unique things that humans can have. They might be from the sun but theyâre like having a face and body full of stars like the night sky. He could spend hours lying together with MC and gently tracing them.

The desire to throw a really big angst wrench in your fic after swearing up and down that it was going to be more "lighthearted" and "happy." But it would make so much seeeeense. Hnnnng
Just a collection of bits (HCs, speculation, and OM lore fixes/sidestepping to keep things consistent) that Iâve put together so far from my work on Community Magic (in which Evie, occasionally mentioned below, is my OC). I may add to this over time {Iâve added to this like 3 times already since originally posting a couple hours ago} as the fic takes shape and as OM adds new content to serve as my own reference. :)
Obviously, may contain spoilers below, so read at your own risk.
If you have your own speculation/fixes or Iâm missing information that clarifies some bit of confusing OM lore, Iâd love to hear it! The OM core story is still ongoing and the way a lot of this is gleaned from the chats and side bits, itâs very possible that something will be fleshed out further after writing this. The manga in particular will probably help to flesh out more of the actual OM world/background stuff. Iâm knowingly shaping a lot of things to help fit my story into OM.
The below is SFW, but my fic is not (itâs E-rated). Please check out Community Magic on Ao3 (if youâre 18+)!
I recommend clicking through to the desktop post of this on my blog if you want proper formatting in all of its carefully tiered, bullet-point glory. Tumblr otherwise strips the formatting when viewed as a basic post and does make it harder to read. :(
Updated 7/1/2022
Royal Academy of Diavolo
The abbreviation âR.A.D.â is one I can see people referring to as both âthe RADâ and âRAD.â Evie routinely says âthe RAD,â while Lucifer more formally uses âR.A.Dâ (with all the damn periods).
I noticed this after I kept typing âthe RADâ but then noticed in-game that no-one prefaces it with âtheâ... I wonder if there are any stores that I can similarly butcher by adding an âsâ to the end of the name that doesnât actually belong there. Maybe Goetia (Asmoâs hair salon)? I can see Evie turning that into âGoetiaâs.â
I have the RAD set up as a combination of facets of school types.
It offers a multitude of classes on just about anything one could imagine and more. While it has tenured faculty on staff, it also brings in guest instructors on a rotational basis to lead classes and/or lectures on their niche/specialty area.
Most classes are offered in the official language of the Demon Realm (which I named âDevilâs Tongueâ), but many classes are also offered in other languages found throughout the Demon and Human Realms (I HC that through prior unregulated travel to and from the HR that many common HR languages had taken hold in areas of the DR).
Thereâs no real âcompletingâ or graduating RAD. You can take higher and/or more specialized classes as you pass classes.
You can become certified/ranked/qualified through taking certain class paths, however, but these need to be maintained.
Newcomers are given an entrance placement exam and current students are routinely reassessed for proficiency, sending them back for remedial classes as needed.
I donât believe for a second that Diavolo, Barbatos, and Lucifer are âstudentsâ and actively taking classes (possibly ones here and there on whims). They are far too busy actually running and managing things. The âStudent Councilâ is far more a governing body of the students and RAD matters. There doesnât appear to be any other RAD governing body (like a board or headmaster or principal).
I think Lucifer makes his Brothers take a minimum of classes as ambassadors of Diavoloâs program/vision to provide a presence at the RAD but also to ensure that they are striving to better themselves. And to give them that much less time to get into trouble.
Diavolo is Student Council President by simple virtue that he created it. I think itâs possible that once the RAD lifts off the way he truly wants it to as a unifying hub between the three realms that he and the rest of the council will step back and allow for a more democratic voting process for council president and council members.
He may stay on as a kind of principal or director that the Student Council would then report to for a time after that before then also handing off that position.
While Celestial and Demon Realm leaders choose their own respective exchange students to send to the other realms, the Human Realm (which lacks a central leader or governing body [magic or otherwise]) candidates are magically chosen (maybe a la Goblet of Fire spitting out a number of qualified names? lol) at random after certain criteria are accounted for and then Diavolo and Michael pick from the proposed candidates.
Diavolo uses the experience and input gleaned from each new rotation of exchange students to better adapt the RAD and the Devildom to their human and angel visitors.
Things like ensuring that the RAD cafeteria has human-safe options.
I HC that he takes this further to establish laws like having clear warning labels on all pre-packaged foods for known detrimental effects on humans, etc.
Though even though theyâre there (like on the Lunatic Pudding), even he isnât the most diligent about checking before attempting to feed his human exchange student.
Given Evieâs very specific dietary needs, maybe heâd go as far as to ensure the RAD cafeteria options all have ingredient lists available.
One of Evieâs chief complaints at first is that thereâs no handbook or crash course for humans on adjusting to life in the Devildom (and there likely does not exist the opposite for other exchange students, either). Â Without constantly asking someone, she doesnât know what foods are safe or dangerous to eat.
In the scheme of things, the RAD is still very new and novel in the Demon Realm.
As such, I HC that many demons are still very skeptical of it and Diavoloâs goals. There may even be other schools in the Demon Realm at large that are considered prestigious and âbetterâ than the RAD simply because they have the established tradition and age. However, because it is Diavoloâs pet project and heâs the soon to be King, many nobles/upper class demons would still be taking advantage of attending the RAD and âgetting in earlyâ to gain points with Diavolo and possible future boasting rights.
I donât think itâs yet at the point of where it needs to be choosy over admittance as itâs not yet anywhere near capacity. If you want to attend the RAD, you are welcomed. Tuition is free and there is assistance for those unable to afford things like the uniforms.
The Demon Realm and Devildom
In my HC, Demon Realm =/= Devildom. âDevildomâ refers only to Diavoloâs immediate kingdom within the greater Demon Realm. Heâs still ruler beyond the kingdom walls, but itâs more like the Realmâs âcapitol city.â
This makes it easier to imagine other cities and non-Devildom locations within the Demon Realm.
Those other cities would be home to other academies/schools, giving rise to the various sports and academic teams that may visit RAD for events.
The Celestial Realm would be ruled similarly, but the Human Realm, being the baby of the three, I HC as still very much finding its own legs. Here, the Human Realm doesnât have a central governing body at all, but is broken into the many factions weâre more familiar with. As such, there are many magical bodies of governance over their own regions/peoples and not a whole lot in the way of unified standards beyond magic and magical beings as a whole being kept secret from the rest of humanity.
Because of this, the HR doesnât have much say in its own exchange students. The demon and angel students sent to the HR are very much acting as agents gauging how to best establish some kind of unification with the HR (or thatâs at least what Diavolo has charged the demon exchange students with working towards). The students to the HR likely normally have longer stays by virtue of them being immortal. Human exchange students are normally given a yearâs stay in their respective realm as they often do want to return home at some point and because they normally have much shorter life spans.
The other levels of Hell have their own proxy-rulers (lords) that govern in Diavoloâs stead and each level is completely different from the next. Itâs apparently technically possible to walk between them, but I hear âlevelâ and I get the image of, like, planes floating over each other, the top most being the first level you could descend to from the Human Realm and the bottom most being the plane with the Devildom. Maybe âwalkingâ would consist of walking to the edge of each one and finding a way down to the next, smaller plane (or up to the next, larger plane).
Flat Earth confirmed. Yâknow, maybe demons visiting the Human Realm got really confused over how the Earth is round when the Demon Realm planes have distinct edges (maybe the CR does too) and sparked the whole flat earth âdebate.â I was gonna write something about how Demons may not have even been to space (...do they have Space?) with their technological level and had to remind myself that we had rockets before the first Gameboys and way before the modern cellphone. Probably harder to reverse engineer a working rocketship, though, haha. Or maybe a/some demons outright told humans the Demon Realm has edges/isnât round like Earth and someone took that completely the wrong way.
Someone write about space demons.
Maybe the first level is the largest and they get progressively smaller, with the Devildom plane being the smallest. Weaker level demons may make up the majority of the first plane and as they progress towards the Devildom plane, there are more higher status, stronger demons. Weak level demons would be common and strong level demons (like the Brothers and various Devildom nobility) would be far less common. There are no laws preventing demons from moving between the planes - it would be more âyou can go to another plane if you can get there, but then you also have to be able to survive there or youâll, you know...die.â
More extreme weather events occur the lower down in Hell you go. Â Thatâs why we get events for bizarre weather in the Devildom so often.
Itâs canon that the Demon Realm (and likely the Celestial Realm) is much less technologically advanced than the Human Realm. This could be due to the DM/CR having much more of a reliance on magic and therefore less of a reason to develop tech, of which they likely both take frequent inspiration from the HR (if not outright adapting HR technology when they can). It could also be due to angels and demons being immortal - time is on a much longer scale to them so they donât have some of the same innovative drives as humans (who can do astounding things under the duress of time and life). This is the basis for me throwing Evie at the Devildomâs ancient utilities infrastructure (much of which will be/is based on my own experience in the industry).
While the Brothers help Diavolo run the RAD, I think heâd have other kingdom/personal advisors for Devildom and Demon Realm governance (though the RAD also seems like it could outright be Diavoloâs version of his main governing body that just happens to also have school functions). With as busy and drowning in paperwork as Lucifer is, he may also be advising on this with how close he is to Diavolo.
The Brothers seem to have other higher level jobs/duties (like Levi being a/the(?) Grand Admiral of Hellâs Navy), but I get the impression that they are often circumstantial and not constant, which lands them taking random jobs here and there at places like Hellâs Kitchen and The Fall. Though with being immortal, job hopping is probably a frequent, normal thing for demons.
Iâve clashed a few real-world governing systems together to create the idea of various Bureaus, how theyâre run, and the hierarchy of who they report to.
Like the Energy, Resources & Utilities Bureau that Evie ends up interning at.
Ex: The Bureau Director (in this case, Director Thrallhammer) heads the Utilities Bureau Board. The Director then reports directly to Diavolo.
The Chief of X (Finance, Field Operations, etc) then reports to the Director. (Not to be confused with terms like CEO/CFO/COO).
Special project/interest committees may then form from various groups of Board members.
I think that major retail spots may strive to advertise themselves as more (compared to the rest of the DR) technologically âmodern.â I designed the main mall in my fic to be like a combination of the standard Devildom architecture but with heavy influence from the US 90s aesthetic (weird shapes, bright colors, questionable patterns!). So to MC/Evie, it would almost feel like taking an uncanny step back in time even though itâs perceived as modern, even âfreshâ in the DR.
However, places like Majolish and The Fall rely more on a âmodern magicâ aesthetic (and less on non-magic-tech overall) and end up looking more modern/advanced to the MC/Evie (and more towards what they would expect).
By canon, in the Demon Realm, there is no sun, the day progresses in various shades of dark (the CR is the opposite in that the sun is always shining and there is no dark night).
HC: So make sure your human is getting enough vitamin D and other supplements! Diavolo keeps a doctor on retainer whoâs more well-versed in human health and anatomy than most other DR doctors/healers, but they probably still arenât on par with a good HR doctor for knowing human ailments. I would bet that many human (and angel) exchange students begin going through a kind of depression at some point due to lack of enough sunlight.
Itâs discussed at some point in the lore that mushrooms and some plants in the Demon Realm contain far more vitamin D to make up for the lack of sunlight which is why Demon Realm cuisine is heavier on them.
Maybe fungus is more palatable and varied due to a much larger industry of growing it, but you might be stuck with supplements if youâre the exchange student who finds mushrooms unpalatable. :(
Maybe demon exchange students to the CR have the opposite problem with too much sunlight being harmful to them in the longterm?
The (physical being?) relationship between demons and angels is pretty unknown/vague in OM canon.
What is known: Angels can âfallâ and turn into demons. Â Whether thatâs literal or metaphorical, idk. Â The Brothers got kicked out of/âfellâ from the Celestial Realm, transforming from angels to demons. Â That leads to the following different paths of my further speculation:
1. They are two sides of the same coin when one looks at their religious inspiration, with at least some population of demons forming from fallen angels and the demon Realm/âHellâ being created after the fall of the first angels and/or spirits (well before the Brothers fell). Â The Demon Realm possibly being created from a corrupted form or part of the Celestial Realm.
This also opens the theory of the Human Realm being created âin the image ofâ the Celestial Realm, further pulling from religious inspiration.
2. Or they formed independently in completely separate but ostensibly adjacent Realms. Â Angels can become demons from losing their holy magic, and I guess their bodies âfallingâ to or being corrupted by the influence of Demon Realm magic.
Question: can the reverse happen and demons become angels in this scenario?
Lesson 30 discusses how the Celestial and Demon Realms came into existence separately at the same time (I stumbled on this after writing this portion).
But doesnât entirely discount all of speculation 1.
Angels and demons arenât the black and white âgood and evilâ as many people view them. Â In the world of OM, theyâre mostly treated as different beings with drama between them and possibly different types of magic.
They canât really have different Realm-level sources of magic or angels and humans wouldnât be able to use their form of magic in the Demon Realm. Â MC learns magic while in the DR and Solomon frequently uses magic, so unless what theyâre learning and using is solely âDemon Realmâ magic, the source for magic is universal. Â There may be things preventing certain types of that magic from being used in the opposite Realm and/or a personâs link to that specific magic can be severed (fallen angels losing their holy magic).
From Simeonâs story arc, we learn that angels can be stripped of their powers (banished to the Human Realm), and seemingly become human, too. So thereâs some kind of further change that happens when they are banished to the Demon Realm - either in general with angels becoming demons or uniquely with the Brothers and possibly something Diavolo or the prior Demon King did for/to them. Maybe being stripped of âbeingâ an angel makes them vulnerable to DR magic that influences them. (I am not quite this far in the main story though because Iâve been slacking due to the constant events >.>)
Iâll dig more into the CR stuff in another post since I have dived into that side quite as much yet.

Story Summary: Evie believed that she had finally settled into a comfortable life - well, comfortable for a half-demon hedge witch living in the Human Realm with a sizable bounty on her head. But being thrust into the Demon Realm with an offer of protection and new beginnings for participating in their âstudent exchange programâ turns that all on its head. Is it truly a new beginning or will the forces of her past catch up to her? Can she really fit in here any better than in the Human Realm?

OR how a witch with ADHD, an overly-doting demon father, that recurring nightmare where youâre back in school except itâs real this time, and seven new boisterous housemates ends up on a personal mission of modernizing the Devildomâs utilities infrastructure one permit at a time.
-Ch. 11: The Exchange Students-
Some Months AgoâŠ
Michael had chosen the angels that would serve as the coming yearâs exchange students from the Celestial Realm, and the demons serving as their own representatives to the Human and Celestial Realms had been sorted. That left only this second Human Realm representative after they had chosen the first from the last batch of names to come from the ornate basin created for the purpose of providing a list of Human Realm candidates to choose from - a means of narrowing down potential prospects.
Diavolo gave the wide bowl a stir with his fingers, watching the whirling fluid glisten until it slowly manifested the name and details of five new candidates. Barbatos stood opposite him dutifully taking note of each as they appeared.
While the process wasnât completely random - he needed some criteria to make this work as smoothly as it could - it was enough so that they did not recognize any of the prompted candidates this time around. With the names gathered, Barbatos was off to the Archive of Souls to retrieve the life files belonging to these humans.
The last few had beenâŠdull, to say the least. They werenât failures for his project by any means, simply painfully average for his own amusement. Diavolo had laughed seeing Solomonâs name offered up from the first batch of names - the sorcerer would certainly liven things up. While he didnât know Solomon well, he knew of him well enough. Barbatos had stated he was neutral on the summoning of his human pact-holder, so he had been pulled as their first Human Realm exchange student. He hoped for another of similar wit to shake things up again.
Five files were brought before him. The first two were nearly dismissed outright - not a thing drew him to them. The third was a musician from the country of Australia. Had potential.
The fourth wasâŠalmost completely blank. Suspiciously so. Evaline...no family name. A young witch born in the Louisiana state of the United States - most likely to the governing coven of that territory but that detail wasnât given. Age, old enough as a human though quite young as a witchâŠÂ Sex and gender were bizarrely blank. Father, motherâŠboth deceased. No current information. The only picture able to be drawn from the file was one of them very young in life - no older than a child - but too hazy to make out many details beyond the flash of auburn hair and wide amethyst eyes. Details were missing and others not populating as they should have been. This file had been tampered with.
Looking at it closer, Diavolo forced away the traces of interfering magic on the file, but his frown deepened when nothing new populated. Something else was preventing it from retrieving further information on this witch. Outside magic?
His lip quirked up. He handed the file back to Barbatos, a glint of excitement in his eyes. He commanded, âSee what you can find on this one. I believe that will be our second exchange student.â
âAs you wish, my Lord,â Barbatos responded, sweeping up the other files to return to the Archive. The fifth file taken remained unopened and forgotten, so pleased he was to have been handed a mystery.
He sat back in his office chair, losing himself in his thoughts of what kind of magic could prevent the Archive of Souls from collecting the information of a soul.
Barbatos reported to him his findings a few weeks later. He had managed to find the witch by complete happenstance - which they both knew to be too improbable to not be at the winding of the threads of fate. There was something drawing them together for a reason.
Evaline had returned to their hometown, Barbatosâ first stop in seeking them out. He recounted that he had sat down at a coffee shop to research the area more thoroughly when another customer - a female-presenting witch with long auburn hair and those striking eyes - walked in to order. And immediately swore and returned to their car to retrieve their wallet. âFor a moment I believed that they had detected me.â That chance meeting had allowed him to surreptitiously follow their movements for the prior two weeks. Barbatos noted that they moved with an abundance of caution, but, with much patience, he was finally able to pinpoint where they called home in another state during a moment of carelessness.
Diavolo hadnât cared for most of the âhowâ details, drawn in by the pictures and video Barbatos had secretly taken. The witch was a curious mix of contradictions and curiosities. They loved animals and music and sweets. They spent equal time between the library, coffee shops, clubs, bars, high scale and seedy areas - Barbatos theorised that they were seeking something as they didn't always seem the most comfortable in the crowds they found themselves in. They shied away from others, had a quiet and gentle manner, were âcharminglyâ clumsy, and perhaps overly apologetic. They wore a glamour that never once faltered and, while they otherwise used their magic sparingly in the open, Barbatos reported that the magic he did feel from them was suspiciously slight given the skilled glamour. They had a temper and righteous streak and could swear up a storm - all seen when they made a scene and dumped their drink over a man at a bar for ignoring another patronâs pleas to leave them alone.
Evaline had caught on that they had a shadow at some point and had begun efforts to flush Barbatos out, prompting him to return and report.
Someone who would bring excitement.
It hadnât been a hard decision for Diavolo to finalize their choice of exchange student. In the coming weeks, he would have Barbatos make the arrangements for bringing them here for the beginning of the new school year.
To say that he was shocked at the turn of events would have been an understatement. It had taken every fiber of his being to contain his excitement after their moody exchange student revealed herself to not only be a witch but born to a demon. The more she spoke, the more was simultaneously revealed yet raised even more questions.
A demi-demon witchâŠ
He had to rein in the mountain of questions he wanted to ask as she sat anxiously alert across from him in his office while her father barely resisted fawning further over her.
She didnât like âEvaline,â nor was she any longer Morcanta - the name renounced with the departure from her coven - she was âEvie,â living under the assumed family name of Felicien. And thus it was so on her official R.A.D. paperwork. She didnât care how she was addressed but had a current preference for feminine terms. He sensed a hesitancy and assured there was no permanence should that change at any point.
Many of her questions made it obvious that she thought like a human, so ingrained with their biases and insecurities that they presumed much the same of the Demon Realm. As the others before her, she would come to see that not all of the rumors of the Demon Realm reflected reality - at least less so since he became ruler. He allayed her concerns while covertly taking note of his own musings.
What was her sin alignment? Too early for him to tell. Possibly bound by Lust and Pride like her fatherâŠor potentially a diminished pull due to her human blood. Perhaps it was better to ponder if she even had a notable alignment?
Elemental leanings? A sharp brightness in her aura hinted towards Fire or perhaps the more volatile Lightning.
What else did her aura reveal? Difficult to tell given how she held it so close. It occasionally jolted, a product of her current anxiety, and revealed flickers of a multitude of magicks. So defensive. Heâd learn more once she settled.
Would she have a lean towards being more human or more demon? Also too early to tell.
Something about her name nagged at him, but he couldnât quite figure out exactly what. Why was it strange?
He could see now that her glamour hid her demon features quite well. Without a trained eye and purposefully looking for it, he didnât believe heâd even have noticed it. While not completely human, he wasnât sure he could have found a better fit for his exchange program. After all, with its success would inevitably come more demi-demons and others as the races co-mingled once more. While they had been rarely born in the past - and it was even more rare for one to be allowed to live past infancy by humans - there were few still living in the Human Realm with enough demon blood to have any claim to the Demon Realm. This was a prime opportunity to study how one would adjust to living in the modern day Demon Realm under his rule.
He mostly brushed off the pesky business of her existence being due to realm breaches from one of his own generals in charge of preventing just those - that was for him to address with Inari privately.
A giddy feeling bubbled up in his chest. This was shaping up to be precisely the fun that he had been seeking.
Next time...
âWhat a wonderful coincidence!â Diavolo beamed at them. Evie wrapped her tail over her lap to pin it down from wagging like an idiot in response. She supposed that she was happy to see them. Uuugh, she was not at all accustomed to having to temper suchâŠemotive responses.
Her dad wasnât even bothering to open his menu, which Evie noticed was in Devilâs script as opposed to her own in English. He happily responded to Diavolo, âWeâre out to celebrate Evieâs first week! Whole day of fun things! Did some running outside the walls this morning.â
Evie scoffed as she looked over the menu, attempting to identify anything recognizable, âWe ran - you walked. Â And I donât think most people would consider four hours spent doing paperwork at the bank to be fun.â Â This was the kind of place that didnât even bother with prices on the menu. Â The kind of place where the Prince would eat for lunch.

Welcome! This is my new (probably mostly) NSFW collection dump for prompts, deleted scenes, alternative scenes, etc, for my fic Community Magic. Prior reading of CM not needed, but encouraged! This contains possible spoilers for CM.
This first scene came about from writing one for Community Magic where Evie ends up (innocently) in Diavolo's bed for the night while everyone's at the castle having fun in their costume pajamas (Evie's is a sea butterfly, but not really relevant here, lol). That one doesn't result in any frisky business since it's faaar too early for that in CM canon, so this is a "what if" alternative: what if aaall propriety was thrown out the window and they gave into the tension right then and there?
-Teaser-
Evie pulled at his arm, planning to quickly roll from his grip, but he wouldn't budge.  And like that her patience evaporated as her anxiety took over.  Letting out a strained sound of frustration, she struggled against him until she felt him nuzzling into the top of her head, his body vibrating with the deep rumbles from his chest.  âŠWas he purring?
Damnit. Â Was she growing increasingly horny without any viable outlets the past few months? Â Yes. Â Was part of that due to her own personal rule of not sleeping with housemates, no matter how willing and attractive they might be? Â Also yes. Â Did she find the Demon Lord attractive? Â Ugh, yes. Â Was breaking her Demon Realm celibacy with its Prince a great idea? Â Probably very not.
âŠTechnically, he wasn't a housemate.
The sudden stiffening of his form told her that he had woken up.
His grip on her loosened as he pulled away enough to put space between them. Â "Sorry, am I holding you too tightly?"
