IN THE SCHEME OF THINGS

      What’s so funny about this? I suspect that the majority of you reading or hearing this were not alive when Stalin was around and ruling the Soviet Union. I was only 10 years old myself at the time of his death in 1953. But he had an enormous impact on the entire world both during and after his death. I’d say that the cold war between the US and USSR was due mostly to his policies and attitudes and American reactions to them. In the early years after WWII, especially the early 1950’s, the US was a very paranoid place. They suspected that Communists were everywhere. There was a standard joke about little old ladies checking under their beds at night for Communists, perhaps secretly hoping to find a male one. Communists were demonized and people had to sign loyalty oaths. The US Congress was especially crazy back then; as bad, if not worse than the current Tea Party. It was guilt by association and many people in the arts and entertainment industries were blacklisted, not allowed to work because of suspected communist associations and activities. Communists were hatching plots and schemes to overthrow the US government everywhere, according to these lunatics. In reality there was a lot of anti-Semitism and racism in these so-called investigations. The truth, as I see it, is that today’s fears of terrorist Arab plots are a symptom of the same paranoia, the need for a country to always have someone or some people to blame for their problems and troubles. Sadly it’s a very old story that will probably go on forever. But let’s not forget Edgar Bergen’s great one liner of a joke. He was a ventriloquist and comedian in the 40’s and 50’s. Here we see the current US Secretary of State, John Kerry walking past Stalin’s grave in Moscow. Another name for a grave is a cemetery plot (piece of land where a dead person is buried), or just “plot” for short. So clearly the place where one of the best known communists of all time is buried can be called a “communist plot.” Who knows, maybe it’s a zombie Stalin who’s behind all the terrorism today. And THAT’s what’s so funny!
