I'm really tickled by the roy cohn obsession and I just want to say I get it, wondering how this came about for you
Thanks for asking!I’ve never had anyone ask questions on my blog so thank you!
I have never been picky on which era of history I like studying. But I always loved learning about the 1950s.The beginnings of the Cold War,Ike’s presidency and the McCarthy hearings were interesting topics. The 50s were a wild time that’s for sure.
Roy’s a more recent obsession for me.I knew that he was McCarthy’s aide and I wanted to know more about him.Whats not to be interested in Roy?He was articulate, graduated law school at 20 and knew how politics worked from an early age.
On another note,I knew how bad and slimy he was as a person. He prosecuted and ruined the lives of hundreds who were just like him. What he did to the LGBTQ community is a slap in the face considering he was also a gay man.He has haunted the narrative of the US government for years since the president was his mentee. His ending is sort of a karmic justice. Its not like he deserved to die or anything.
I think Roy’s childhood is a big part of who he became(no justification).I’ve always been interested in why bad people become the way they are. Most of the time that comes from their early developmental years and Roy is no exception. His parents marriage was a sort of arrangement for Roy’s father,Al to become a judge. His mom got him rhinoplastic surgery as an infant which is why his nose had a scar.
He valued friendships a lot.Once you were his friend, he would go lengths to help you(Army-McCarthy hearings started because of Schine’s drafting) .He knew how the game was played and was never afraid to cross a line.
Roy Cohn is the definition of a shitty person with a miserable story. He was a hypocrite and snake who ruined people’s lives who died a miserable death to AIDs .His life and story as a whole was really interesting which is what drew me to it in the first place.
