So, I was talking with my mother and trying to explain a meme saying raccoons are trash pandas. Then she stopped me dead by saying, "Is that real?"
"What?"
"Is that a real animal?"
I was utterly flummoxed, but tried to answer the question as asked.
"Yes, a raccoon is a real animal. We have them here."
She immediately demanded to know if I thought she was an idiot, OBVIOUSLY she knows RACCOONS are real.
I fumbled around verbally for a while and eventually ascertained that she was asking if "trash pandas" were a real and separate animal from raccoons. Apparently she regards my memes as "a fantasy world," so she is never sure if any animal I describe is on the level of Autism Cat or Pallas Cats.
I could then further explain that "trash panda" was a descriptive nickname, like "cat snake" or "cobra chicken."
I then had to ALSO explain, in the face of ongoing indignance, that I did not think she was crazy, I did not understand the question correctly. I regularly, like almost every day, have someone ask a question that makes zero sense to me. Then I have to try to give a rational answer to what appears to be a question about if raccoons are real or why do buses have wheels or why am I wearing a shirt.
Because I can just say "I don't understand the question," and sometimes I do, but that never produces good results. It's like they've just said "what color?" As I was in a buffet line, and it sounds to me like they're asking what color the chicken is. If I say I don't understand, they'll just say it again but less patiently. If I say "light brown?" Then they might think I'm an idiot or a smartass, but at least they will be forced to clarify that they want to know if I want a blue or green tray.
Why do I care about tray color? I do not know and I will never know. Or I will get charged more because a green tray indicates a different price category that indicates I want to include the sushi bar. It could go either way.
Being around people is exhausting. Even when it's people I love, at some point my brain is going to fail to correctly interact with what someone's trying to tell or ask me. Then I'm going to have to try and navigate toward a meaning that is obvious to them but impenetrable to me.
This is also why texting or internet is easier. I less often have to try and correctly parse if someone is looking at a different part of the environment than I am or asking about a different part of something I said than the part I intended to be important.
