While the papal colors can be traced back to Gregory the Great (and possibly further to the Roman Empire), they were not used as a flag before the 19th century. There is, however, probably a connection between the colors used by the bishopric of Urgell and those used by the Papacy of Avignon. 2. Andorra's flag had a series of changes between 1934 and 1971 (chiefly, changing the thickness of the middle stripe), but the basic design remained the same as the 1866 version. 3. France's flag, similarly, underwent some changes between the first version (in 1794) and a standardized version in 1848. Later, in 1976, the shade of blue was adjusted. 4. Versions of the Principalities flag exist with the French color order, but there is debate as to whether Romania's flag was inspired by the French flag of 1848. 5. The old flag of Wallachia was likely on a yellow-white damask field, which faded quickly. During the 1600s the flag of Wallachia adopted the more common white background.
