Common Iora

Common iora, March 2022 Umamaheshwar, Telangana

These ioras are found in forests, gardens, and urban areas from India through southwest China and into parts of Southeast Asia. Foraging in the canopy in pairs or small flocks, they eat insects, which they often catch in flight, along with some spiders, fruit, and nectar. Males perform courtship displays, flying up into the air, fluffing their feathers and spiraling downward to a perch, then fanning their tails and dropping their wings. They build deep cup-shaped nests from grass, plant fibers, and spiderwebs, usually in forked branches of trees. Both parents incubate the eggs.
