I’m halfway through season 2 of Star Trek Prodigy, which means I just saw the episodes The Devourer of All Things parts 1 & 2 and they were INCREDIBLE (spoilers below).
Where No One Has Gone Before is the episode that made me fall in love with TNG, and it made me a Wesley Crusher defender. It’s my favourite episode of TNG season 1 and it inspired my favourite Star Trek show, Voyager. The Devourer of All Things are episodes that feel like they were written for me personally.
The episodes have:
Wesley Crusher being AWESOME. He’s a time traveller clearly inspired by Doctor Who but not in a way that’s derivative or contrived. He’s been the one sending the messages! I just love that he’s one of the Travelers, and also that he’s different from them because he’s attached to his Prime Universe. He meddles because he wants to save his mother, Doctor Crusher, and that’s so sweet. Also, Wesley Crusher being important in Prodigy is just neat because in TNG he was the child prodigy!
Tank top Janeway. She ignores an Admiral to protect her crew at all costs, she flies a shuttle like a boss, and basically saves the universe by saving Wesley Crusher and the gang. Also she grumbles about time travel. I’ve loved Admiral Janeway in Prodigy, but these episodes checked off my wish list of Janeway moments.
The devourers. These creatures are actually terrifying, and I love that they look like the squid monsters of The Matrix. These beings erase your existence, and they truly feel like cosmic horrors.
Thought power! In Where No One Had Gone Before, the Travelers talked about the power of thoughts and in these episodes we get to see it which is so cool.
More Commander Tysess. I’ve really enjoyed seeing an Andorian on the bridge, and I’m so glad he got a chance to shine and be a hero.
Maj’El becoming a part of the gang! I love Vulcans and I’ve enjoyed her character so far but these episodes made me love her character. Also, her name is such a fun nod to the iconic Majel Barrett.
Wesley talking about his sweaters. This show just gets me.
I’m so excited to keep watching, but I’m trying to pace myself because I don’t want to finish watching it too soon. I would love to hear other people’s thoughts about these episodes, and also about Prodigy in general!
