How To Color Like Me
Things one learns when coloring one's own comics:
1). It's time consuming!
2). But also relaxing.
3). Coloring backgrounds first helps set your palette and nail the mood of the scene.
4). You feel way better about your line art once it gets that missing piece!
In 2011, I entered a contest where everyone had to take the original black and white version of the artwork from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie adaptation comic cover and color it. This is my entry.
I didn’t win but I think it was pretty high in the running. At the time, this got some attention and someone got in touch with me regarding doing some color work on a creator-owned comic. The project never really moved forward, as is pretty typical.
Of course, I look at this image today and all I see are the things I could have done better, but it’s ok I guess. Working on a TMNT project for real is definitely something I want to do.
