Super Cyborg Optimus Prime

I finally got one of these after being after it for quite awhile. It's an 11 inch plastic figure from Super7. As a licensed product, it does not transform.

Why did I want it? I don't know. Aside from a few movable joints, its only major feature is that you can remove the front torso panel to reveal Optimus' robo-innards, which I will not likely ever display uncovered.

I just think it's a cool collectible piece. I found an opened one at a price I could tolerate, and while there are also clear and metallic variants out in the wild, it's getting harder to find a regular version. I already have Megatron and Soundwave (which are still in their boxes for now), so I figured I wanted Optimus to go with them.

Deluxe MotU Cartoon Collection Figures

Thanks to a recent sale on Mattel Creations, I got a big batch of Masters of the Universe figures recently, with these Deluxe 200X Cartoon Collection figures being among the cooler ones. Here are Clawful, Ram-Man, and Beast Man.

They are HUGE! Compared to the regular figures, these are bigger and each have completely unique body types.

I wasn't intending to get into Cartoon Collection, but I have wound up with quite a few of the figures based on the Filmation show. Now they are doing figures from the 2000s series, my favorite version of MotU, and while I'm picking and choosing for now, I think I will have a lot of them by the time it's all said and done. Deluxe Roboto is starting to trickle out, and Whiplash is on the way too.

Ninjatron Style - Magmatron

Magmatron, the evil overlord of Destruction from the Japanese exclusive Beast Wars Neo! Not so obscure anymore though, as he's appeared in recent times, thanks to the awesome Commander class Magmatron in the Transformers Legacy line. That's what I was looking at when I made this art, though obviously, I made my version a lot more Super Deformed. He still looks angry all the time, though!

Ninjatron Style - Armada Optimus Prime

Optimus Prime, Super mode! I drew Optimus from Transformers Armada in my style, mostly based on the Transformers Legacy Commander class Optimus.

I think it's kind of funny how the gun turned out so small, but I ran out of room on the page so it could only be that size. It's pretty much a super deformed drawing, so I think it works.

The background was my attempt at recreating the design from the packaging of the Armada toy line.

Remember this handsome guy? My Pet Monster is a legendary part of 1980s pop culture and has been making a bit of a nostalgia fuelled comeback in recent years.

Ice from the Heart

There was a moment in time, a number of years ago, when the site rave.dj went super viral and everyone was using it to combine music videos together and generate mashups that fused two songs into one. I tried a number of times, and most of them failed to make anything musically decent, until I struck gold by combining this unlikely pair of early 1990s songs by Vanilla Ice and "Macho Man" Randy Savage. I was impressed at how perfectly the two videos fit together.

I posted this years ago on Instagram and it was almost immediately taken off by copyright bots. It shouldn't be, as mashups are transformative works and there was no monetary intent. I pleaded my case using whatever convoluted method of appeal that was presented to me, and it was reinstated, until recently when it was taken off again. I still disagree, but I don't want to argue anymore, so I'm putting it here now and hoping for the best.

Transformers G2 Laser Optimus Prime

Despite the eye-searing color schemes and the earsplitting rap commercials, or maybe even because of them, Generation 2 is one of my favorite parts of Transformers history. Towards what would wind up being the end of the line, this Laser Optimus Prime toy would be released, and it would be considered one of the best Transformers toys ever made for many years. I wanted to draw it in my style. The background is based on the packaging from the 1995 range of toys.

I made this go with a panel about Transformers G2 for TFcon Toronto in 2024.

Transformers Star Convoy Reissue

I remember being introduced to Transformers fandom in the early days of the World Wide Web, and one of the first things I learned about was how there were Japanese exclusives, including Star Convoy, this upgraded version of Optimus Prime released in 1991. I was totally taken by it, and just had this feeling in my bones that one day, I would own it.

Fast-forward several years later, and Transformers reissues would become a thing. Star Convoy would see a re-release in 2005. It has some updated coloring and a completely different package, but it’s pretty much the same toy. I gladly bought one for $90 CDN at a TFcon some time around when it came out. A much better proposition than trying to afford a vintage one!
