A Piece from Education and the Ways We Learn

WWC College Composition, Spring 2009

The eighteen year old gal from New Mexico discovered grits are delicious. She discovered old milk makes chunky white mold. She discovered coffee from Sage cafe sucks. She discovered tofu is not necessarily disgusting pending its context. She discovered the gratification of peeling her own oranges. She discovered cups of freshly boiled liquid with lids on should never be shaken or stored sideways. She discovered the hard way the absolute necessity of confining food in plastic rodent-proof containers. She discovered how friends can be dropped like hot grilled cheese sandwiches fresh off the press if they do not effectively communicate with each one another. She discovered her baked goods may be able to bring people together but that does not mean they will get along.

She discovered a newfound respect for people with radical beliefs and lifestyles consistent to their beliefs. She discovered good intentions do not always deliver great outcomes. She discovered friends are nice. She discovered solitude is sometimes even nicer. She discovered a literal burden from her possessions. She discovered ants can have wings and ladybugs in mass are not as lovely as children storybooks portray them to be. She discovered a strong joy in belting out the latest WWC choral song on lonesome late night bus trips. She discovered the freedom and versatility leggings bring to any skirt, dress, or even shorts.

She discovered an extreme appreciation of text messages and facebook—both avenues for communication with her best friend in New Mexico and even her uncle in the Netherlands. She discovered that one million seconds equals twelve days. She discovered one billion seconds equals thirty two years. She discovered obstacles in expressing how she really feels. She discovered a strong and growing dissatisfaction with the sharp snide comments and constant blows that flow from certain friends mouths. She also discovered an even stronger dissatisfaction with humanity and certain historical political figures for their insensitive choices on social welfare. She discovered a certain level of business prevents over-thinking and additional levels of panic and pandemonium. She discovered a refreshed passion and yearning to learn American Sign Language.

She discovered she is not superwoman. She discovered that sometimes she just cannot do everything she needs to do even if she has time. She discovered a strong will to overcome her inhibitions. She discovered a voice inside of her screaming, “Be bold!” She discovered a need to live loud and messy because that is who she is.
