207 --- Animation
Manipulation of digital 3D graphics has been getting easier and easier. Even my programming language of choice has a nice 3D graphics engine.
With all this progress, there must be an easy way to animate these 3D graphics! I mean, you can move the geometry around and that is a form of animation. The sort of animation I am referring to is ‘skeletal animation’ and the name of it must scare people away because there is a scarcity of good formats and tools. To be fair, animations can be reasonably created in Blender or any other 3D software that supports the creation of such animations. I may criticise the user-friendliness of these type of applications but that is not really the issue. The issue is interoperability.
Here are the standard 3D animation formats. Collada (DAE) Quite a flexible open format with support for multiple objects and animations in one file. Sounds great, except that it’s an ambiguous format and most software is unable to properly save or load this format. Filmbox (FBX) A great format that has animation support considered to be the industry standard. Unfortunately, it’s a proprietary format where the usage of it is fairly restricted. GL Transmission Format (GLTF) The JPEG of 3D model formats, this is an unambiguous format with excellent animation support (skeletal animations). The only issue is that it was released last year and it still needs to gain traction in order to become a standard format. I hope that GLTF catches on and there is finally a sane 3D format that works everywhere. The 3D scene has been a mess and this is the last barrier in the way of me being able to create beautiful 3D applications with animations! Soundcrab

Cycles For Haters
I’m one of those “remaining users” that hates Cycles. When I see it mentioned on a help forum, I stop reading. When I watch a help video, I stop watching. Yet thanks to reading Blender site feeds, I’m tolerably familiar with the latest developments… and I KNOW the old Blender Internal engine is going away in a coming release.
All I need is the ability to bake out AO, maybe normals, and possibly a…

C O N T E N T S: KEY TOPICS Mesh animation (geometry caching) records the position of every vertex in an animated 3D scene over time.(More…) Personally, I feel that this is a work of art, an artist?s impression of what Jesus may have looked like, expressed in 3D. It doesn?t prove anything any more than the animated 3D movie, “Barbie and the Magic of…
