What I’m researching right now is how engaging in a fandom community has helped people develop a rhetorical voice and identity. right now there seems to be a lot of research on the culture of fandom communities and how fandom “re-imagines” narratives and media (a subject of one article I came across) but there doesn’t seem to be research that argues being in a fandom can help you develop the necessary tools to be a rhetorician and scholar with an “authoritarian” voice. My working thesis argues, plainly, that being in a fandom can help you be a better writer. 

I was inspired by two experiences. The first was the utter vitriol that surrounded the ending of Game of Thrones. The internet poured with an outright and almost unanimous rejection of the eighth season that was honestly quite a phenomena, and normal, average, every day people were engaging with the media to talk about how wrong it was. People were using fandom to argue and develop a voice. I was also inspired by my experiences being a member of many different fandoms, being a fanfic writer and engaging with the community. Writing fanfiction has helped me become a better, clearer, and more concise writer in my academic life, so I want to talk about that as well in my research, as well as include what others have to say about it. Being a woman of color I have found a voice in fandom and felt important in a way I’m not sure I would have elsewhere, and I do intend to talk about that as well.

On the two years his senior point, I worked out the school years and how they overlap etc. And, if my calculations are correct, regulus could have easily have been in the year below Snape etc. Even tho there was about two years between him and some of the others in the year above because of the way British school years work with them starting in September and ending in the summer of the next year. However, this changes depending on when you head canon his birthday

Yeah, it all depends on the birthday, but also we know JK Rowling’s weird systems like

“THere are 1000 students in Hogwarts”

“They’re all equally divided into different houses”

“Also there are like 5 boys and 5 girls in each house for every year” - “Ms Rowling, that would make it 280 students”

“Oh... umm.. shit, I’m bad at math”

Am defo gen z myself (born year 2000) and I think the first time I had the internet in my pocket was when I was 11?? I’d started high school and was given a nokia brick which I think may have had the capacity for the internet?? But I used it purely for texting my mum when I would be late home.

I had a phone that could “access the internet” but we never had an internet plan and the screen was miniscule so it wouldn’t have even been good to use

I got an iPhone when I turned 14 and went to high school. Before that I had iPod touches, but we had WiFi only ones with no data.

I spent 14 years of my life without internet in my pocket. I remember using Dial Up. I used VHS until I was like 10 and made mixed CDs. I had a flip phone for like two years and then a slide-up keyboard phone for two more.

make it easy for yourself! i have the attention span of a kitten on red bull so whenever i need to get something done i try to lower the start cost as much as possible. some examples 

for more unpleasant tasks that means doing stuff in pieces sometimes - like, i’ll bring my laptop to the table, i’ll open it, i’ll go grab a snack - but then my brain is like oh, laptop open, that means the Task is already Started, let’s go

gotta write a cover letter? break into chunks. Open document. name document. spew out random sentences. organize them. edit. break the task down into TINY pieces if you have to! like, straight up, “open laptop” is a piece. 

FOR FUN STUFF LIKE FIC - i write 95% of my fic on my phone. i have the google docs app and it syncs across everything, so i can log in anywhere, on any computer if i want to! any time i have the urge to write, i jump on it - my phone’s always with me so i can always just open the doc and get it in there. 

this took time to get used to. i used to only write on my laptop, then i slowly started upping how much i wrote on my phone bc when i’m commuting or right before sleep is usually when i have Ideas and Sentences. i need to get them down right away or i forget! i got used to writing on my phone (LOVE IT. SO FAST. SO EASY. I CAN LOG INTO GOOGLE DOCS AT WORK IF I WANT TO AND PICK UP EXACTLY WHERE I LEFT OFF WRITING ON MY PHONE IN THE BATHROOM OR WHATEVER). now i pretty much use my laptop or ipad to post (bc phone doesn’t keep formatting when i copypasta into ao3. otherwise i would be posting from my phone also.)  Figure out what works for you and don’t be discouraged if it takes some time to get into the groove!

but seriously if you’re looking to speed yourself up - do whatever it takes to make the situation easy for you. I finished writing the latest chapter of snipers while in a lyft on my way to a party & when i arrived i used my dear friend’s wifi to yeet that shit onto ao3 from my ipad. I have posted from friends’ laptops, work computers, one time off my damn phone when i was stuck in an airport (had to format italics MANUALLY i was LIVID) - whatever works!
