[Only the NWRF could think of an idea so deliberately obtuse. Everyone has been calling out for something to give for months, and what do the NWRF deign to share? An art exhibition. Kip wants to believe that it’s a joke, but he’s not quite so naive as that. He knows how they work: who needs basic human rights when you’ve got the illusion of class?

If Clove was actually a woman of any sort of class, she’d be changing policies and helping people, not putting on art exhibitions. Qu’ils mangent de la brioche indeed. Isn’t it about time to bring back the guillotine? Such are Kip’s thoughts as he dresses for the event - jeans, blue t-shirt, denim jacket, because he’s not dressing up all fancy to be insulted by this bourgeois bullshit.

Moving slowly through the exhibitions, he feels a lot of things, and it largely isn’t caused by the art, but by the intention of the organiser. Hey, maybe Clove’s a genius after all - if the provocation of thought and feeling is the aim of art, she’s certainly managed that. He’s particularly thrown by a fence post ensnared in barbed wire with a spray-painted smiley face smudged across the surface, red bullet hole sprayed through the center of its forehead.]  

So... are we calling this, what... Neo-Neo-Dadaism?

[Orson has never been very good at parties. Which probably goes without saying at this point. 

But even when he was better at being the subject of some kind of social attention, even when he had Joel, and an array of people who called themselves friends (though he’d privately been less sure about how deep those roots truly ran) he still hadn’t ever quite figured them out. 

Truthfully, social events were like giant guessing games for Orson, usually relatively anxiety enduring and always at least modestly embarrassing. One way or another, he’d put his foot in his mouth, or spill something on himself or do something he decidedly could not undo. 

But walking into the new Brink common room is actually sort of a relief on two fronts. The first, is that it’s nice to see that the promise is real—the Brink tower is completely rebuilt, and he’ll have somewhere to move home to. It’ll be nice to be back. And with any luck (and judging by first looks in the Common Room itself) it might actually be in better shape now, than it was before the Falling. 

The second is that, well. The ambience as he walks in is soothing. Kind of like treading water in water of a perfect temperature. Just chilled enough to be revitalizing, but not enough to numb skin. Waves lapping neatly over shoulder blades. Soothing, rolling touches. 

The colour scheme reminds him of a spa, for some reason, though he knows that’s not the point. And though he’s not quite sure what to make of the art, he actually really likes the idea behind it, and is fascinated by reading the little notes below each one, talking about where they came from, who made them, and with what. 

He can’t believe he’s even thinking this, actually—but he sees Clove, he’s sort of tempted to thank her. Or congratulate her or something. 

And so he’s decidedly more relaxed than he anticipated being, as he moves around the room leisurely, sipping from a cup of hot apple cider. It’s fairly early still, and he anticipates the room filling up gradually. But he hadn’t bothered spending much time worrying about getting ready. He’d changed his sweater for one with no stains on it, and had headed down. For the moment, he was enjoying the peace and quiet. ]

[He comes up behind Lake, who’s focused on typing a string of messages on his PDD, and points at the display on his friend’s wrist.]

Yeah, I can’t spell for shit. But I do know there’s an apostrophe in ‘you’re’. And in ‘I’m’. And ‘can’t’...

ZACH BASTIAANS / BRINK TOWER OPENING FESTIVITIES

COLONY WIDE NOTICE—RE: BRINK TOWER REOPENING

PDD READS: Good evening citizens. NWRF Rep Clove Modius and the Colony 22 Elite team are very pleased to announce that after more than 4 months of hard work, the Brink dorms and common room have officially been reconstructed and are ready for re-habitation. As it was the Infected Citizens who participated in the chore rotations in these past weeks, it is them we should be thanking for this accomplishment, so be sure to show your gratitude for their commitment to the well-being of the Colony.  

In celebration of this milestone, every citizen is invited to attend the grand opening reception on Saturday, December 1st, put on by Miss Modius herself. Festivities will begin after dinner and will take place in the newly built Brink common room, where attendees will find a special exhibition which Miss Modius has orchestrated in honour of this special occasion. 

The evening will also include appetizers and a specialty bar as an additional gesture of our appreciation, and complimentary drink tickets will be provided to citizens above the age of 18. 

Finally, in light of the reconstruction of the Brink dorm, Colony officials have discussed it and have decided to take the opportunity to reassess and rearrange sleeping quarter arrangements. All Houses will now feature one male, one female and two gender neutral dorms. These gender neutral dorms will be available to anyone, and very shortly every citizen will receive an electronic invitation to send in their preferences for living arrangements. Preferences can not be promised, but will be taken into account. 

Brand new dorming arrangements for all houses will be announced at the event, and all moving may begin Sunday morning. 

After a challenging year, we encourage all citizens to attend and enjoy themselves at this one-of-a-kind event, as this will certainly be an evening to be remembered.
