The 212th is still on Ryloth. The last time they talked, Cody told him—he told him things were going well. He made noises about meeting up with Rex once they both returned to Coruscant on leave, and then he seemed to remember that he believes that he’s not supposed to want things, especially when they have to do with Rex, and he got all quiet and weird until Rex took pity on him and changed the subject, because he’s a sucker and an idiot.

In the six months they haven’t seen each other, Rex has received a crash course in the Force and how it works. He knows he will never be as skilled as Master Windu or Skywalker, but Master Plo Koon has taught him enough. Enough to be useful, to have his own platoon.

Cody seems wary, guarded, even from him, but Rex has learned enough to be able to pick up on his old friend’s energy; clear as a light in the middle of the night, something sharp and acidic, ready to sting.

Rex crosses the corridor without checking around the corner first, spine straight and ‘pad loosely held in his right hand. It’s empty, as he knew it’d be, and so is the big sim room at the end of the hallway. The doors are open, and there’s nothing inside: just a pale, plain room, a splatter of something that might be blood on the white tiles.

He ran there: the shirt of his fatigues is sticking to his back, and he feels sticky, gross, slightly shaky. He takes a second to breathe in deep, trying his very best to force his beating heart to slow down. He swallows, his mouth dry, and then he’s right in front of the med station, and the door’s closed, but no one’s slated use of that floor until 1600, so. Rex clears his throat and knocks, just once. Someone curses, and Rex lets out a shaky exhale, relief turning his knees to jelly.

That’s a brother. They might not have permission to be there either.
