I think a comedian I enjoy just summed up all my dislike for AI generated content in one sentence. Even if it didn’t have environmental impacts and if it didn’t neuter critical thinking skills, there’s just nothing special about what it does to begin with.
It may be a solution to very very niche cases like helping lawyers dig through documentation or in research where massive amounts of data need to be analyzed, but generally speaking, it just summarizes things. All the fun and interesting bits of doing your own research or exploring your own skills dissolves when it becomes a habit to reach for an AI tool for anything that requires a little bit of thought. Why bother when an AI tool has trained you to accept a level of adequacy it deems appropriate for no other reason than that is how its training has shown it to respond?
I think that’s why the only time I enjoy content that involves AI is when it’s by tech-oriented people (i.e., not tech bros/business folks) using it as basically an elaborate joke. Like training an AI to wreck minesweeper or creating an AI anime girl and giving it $10k to invest in stocks and laughing at how chaotic this software can accomplish these tasks while in its infancy (credit to Code Bullet and Neurosama) is some of the funniest AI content I’ve ever seen. But it’s done by people who know the technology with more depth than a typical end user who uses it for convenience. And when this tool is used for convenience over independent thought or exploration, what is so special about the results? Anything? Is the ease of getting a quick answer just that addicting? If AI really does save us so much mental processing power, then what else do we use our brains for?
