Mealybugs are known vectors of Cocoa Swollen Shoot Virus (CSSV). Understanding the interactions between these insects and climatic factors is essential for the development of effective control strategies. The objective of this study is to determine the spatio-temporal distribution of mealybugs in relation to climatic variables. Mealybug populations were monitored within a one-hectare (1 ha) experimental plot, subdivided into five (5) quadrats measuring 20 m × 20 m each. Observations were conducted on the number of mealybugs present on each tree within the different quadrats. Climatic data, including relative humidity and temperature, were recorded monthly over a two-year period, from January 2018 to December 2019. Rainfall and wind speed data were obtained from the weather station of the International Centre for Research in Agroforestry. Throughout the two-year study period, mealybugs were present year-round. The highest population densities were observed in January and April, with a peak in April. Statistical analysis revealed significant correlations between mealybug populations and temperature (r = 0.37), relative humidity (r = –0.50), and wind speed (r = 0.47), all with p < 0.05. No significant correlation was found between rainfall and mealybug fluctuations (r = –0.06; p = 0.66). Spatial analysis indicated heterogeneous distribution of mealybugs across the different plots. These findings provide a solid scientific foundation for the development of predictive models and the implementation of targeted, sustainable integrated pest management strategies to the agroclimatic conditions of Côte d’Ivoire.
The cocoa tree, a crop highly prized in the world for its beans, is one of pillars of the Ivorian economy. However, it is confronted with numerous constraints including climatic disturbances which disturb the cropping calendar. The aim of this work is to determine an optimal planting date allowing a good establishment in the cocoa field. Thus, six-month-old plants were planted on different dates, in particular in March, April, May and June 2015. The parameters studied were the annual rainfall, the monthly distribution of the rains, the growing seasons of Divo, the mortality rate of the plants, the vegetative growth and the production. The results showed that cocoa trees planted in June expressed the highest survival rate (87.9%), followed by that of April (84.96%). The best increases in diameter and height were observed with the March and April plants. Regarding production parameters, the results showed that the March and April plants recorded the highest crowning rates with 66.3 and 57.8% respectively. The same was true of flowering where their rates were 35.4 and 30.3%. Production of cherries was higher in March (25.2%) and April (21.1%) plants. Ultimately the study shows that an early planting of cocoa trees is possible in the Divo region, at least, from the 3rd decade of March.

How about some cocoa pods for our mental health today. With some processing, the seeds of this fruit can be turned into delicious chocolate! This particular plant lives at the Hershey Gardens in Pennsylvania.
May you be peaceful and happy
May you be strong and healthy
May you be safe and feel secure
Photo by me. You can do as you like with it, and I'd love to see the results if you do.
Today I had to say goodbye to my favorite tree, the cocoa one. A few weeks ago, the leaves started turning brown. The pot it was in had plenty of drainage and the plant got the sun it needed. I think it was some sort of bacterial issue since I tried growing a banana tree the same way and it ended the same. Either way, it sucks since I’ve had the tree for almost four months. Since it’s night, I can’t really post a pic, but I’ve decided to fill up the pot and transplant/use it for peppers since I love growing them and I’ll be clearing out my beds in a few months. Maybe I’ll a pic of it tomorrow
