Once upon a time, in a kingdom far, far away, there lived a just and kind prince named Kagami Taiga. Kagami was the first-born son of the King and the heir to the throne, and the kingdom had great hopes for the prince with a heart of gold. On the evening of his coming-of-age feast, he received his own estate and castle, as well as the faithful service of a knight of his choosing.
And this is where our story begins.
Lustrous crystal prisms cast a golden tint to the rows of silverware laid out on long cedar tables. Delectable roasts and freshly baked bread filled the dining hall with a rich aroma while musicians lined up by the walls, producing joyous sounds with strings and pipes. Well-dressed men and women engaged in jovial chatter over fine wine; for most attendants, there was much diplomatic affairs to take care of before the feast began in the earnest. Such was not the case for the newly knighted Aomine Daiki, however. The tanned knight didnāt care much for politics and came to the feast for one reason only: he was here to give his Oath of Fealty to the prince who had chosen him.
It was unusual for a young knight who had just earned his title to serve a lord of such high rank, even if Aomine did completed his training with flying colors. He suspected that it had something to do with his abiding bond with Kagami, though he hadnāt the chance to confirm the theory.
He had met the other for the first time when he was only a page at the kingās castle. The two boys bonded over stolen candle torches and naive make-believes, sneaking into the weapon shed at night and pulling unsavory pranks on the maids. However, in his adolescence, Aomine often had to travel around the kingdom with the knight he was attached to, and as a result, he would lose touch with Kagami for months, sometimes years.Ā Despite the sporadic correspondence, over the years, their childhood friendship grew into a trusted camaraderie that was well-received by their elders.
Of course Aomine had been miffed to spend so much time away from the red-haired idiot he considered his best friend. Unfortunately, there was little he could do about it back then. He always thought that once he became a real knight, then maybe, just maybe, he could stand by Kagamiās side for a little bit longer--
Funny how that worked out, huh?
āLadies and gentlemen, His Majesty the King and His son, Prince Kagami Taiga.ā
At sound of the announcement, everyone fell silent and turned to face the front of the room. The tanned knightās lips curled into a smirk as he put down the glass, taking his sweet time to stagger to his feet. Cobalt eyes locked onto the prince as he entered, and for a second, Aomine's breath caught in his throat. He already knew what to expect, but... damn, Kagami looked good. Wide, ruffled sleeves accentuated the princeās broad shoulders, and his tight-fitting trousers did nothing to hide the sturdy slope of his hips and the long, muscled limbs connected to it. Aomine couldnāt hear the Kingās boring speech over the voice inside his head which screamed lecherous suggestions of what he could do to that body if only he had the chance.Ā (If only it didnāt belong to the crown prince who was also his best friend.)
He was snapped out of his fantasy when he felt the crowdās gaze suddenly shifting onto him. Shit, how long had he been staring at Kagami? Did people notice? A cold sweat broke out on the knightās tanned brow as he tried to figure out what was happening.
āSir Aomine,ā a soft voice beside him whispered.Ā āItās time for your oath.ā
The crowd parted to create a passage leading to the prince. Oh.Ā He shot a grateful glance at the pale blue spectral mage beside him and strode toward Kagami.Ā Stopping just a few feet away, Aomine stood still, letting the weight of what he was about to do fully condense before he knelt down.
He laid down his sword and touched the holy relic.
āBy the Lord, before whom this relic is holy...ā
Aomine clasped his hands and wondered if this oath would ease the guilt of his desires and cement his will to become the man Kagami needed him to be.
āI will be, to His Highness Kagami Taiga, faithful and true, and love all that he loves, and shun all that he shuns, according to Godās law and the order of the world, and never, by will or action, by word or deed, do ought of what is loathful to him. I will observe my homage to His Highness completely, against all persons in good faith and without deceit.ā
He hadnāt thought it was possible for him to submit and choose someone elseās will above his own. At least, not until now. But it was to Kagami that he had surrendered, and somehow, the tanned knight was relieved.
Aomine stretched his arms outward, and waited for the prince to accept his vows.
