āItās been a year already! Your birthday has to have happened at one point, come on.ā He says almost frustrated, if it wasnāt for his underlying teasing-slash-hopeful gift.
Shinichiās painfully aware of Shihoās love for animals and though a puppy or teddy bear wouldāve been a safe choice, the shark was not only more original, but it was like giving her a detective of the sea (which he associated himself with).
The reluctant expression on her face goes well with her reply, āThanks, you shouldnāt have.ā
Shiho canāt decide whether heās taunting her because of that sunstroke she suffered so long ago at the beach, or not ā Seriously, he gets to remember the most unnecessary things sometimesā¦ā, but the fact that he actually got her something (even if it wasnāt her birthday right now), was a nice gesture. Ā Ā Ā
Has anyone ever thought how amusing it is that both of them compare themselves to sharks (for different reasons, though)? But neither really knows what they signified to the other. So unbeknownst to her, Shinichi actually gave her a plush that remotely resembles him as a gift. A complete dork as always lol
Fun fact - Sharks are some of Haibaraās VA, Megumi Hayashibaraās, favorite animalsā¦what a coincidence! Ā
This was the prompted I worked on last and I had lots of trouble to get it done but I canāt complain ^^u Hope you all like it and my lacking attempt at writing a small drabble for it as I did with the previous one.

āOn the late afternoon streets, everyone hurries along, going about their own business.
Who is the person walking in front of you on the rain-drenched sidewalk?
They are covered with an umbrella, and all you can see is a dark coat and the shoes striking the puddles.
And yet this person is the hero of their own life story.
They are the love of someoneās life.ā
A/N:Ā So, so many things to say about this⦠this fic is actually the skeleton of last yearās Time prompt , but since I skipped coai week last year for personal reasons, I figured I could still Frankenstein it into something worth publishing. Speaking of skipping ship weeks, hahah⦠sorry that this is a month + late, in my defense, which I DO have, I kinda caught feelings for someone during day four and it totally messed my mind and my ability to write anything that didnāt revolve around them. Iāve kinda sorted out things with them and I am much at ease now, which brought me back to finishing these. I have a draft for the Hero prompt but Iām not particularly happy with it, so weāll see how that goes...
.
Why do we always fall in love even when we never stand a chance?
.
I.
Ā Heās six when he falls in love for the first time, and he knows that she loves him back. Sheās kind and courageous and everything a girl should be, and when his mother starts calling his play-date her daughter-in-law-to-be, he grimaces in childish disgust despite the warm feeling on his chest, curious how love found him when he wasnāt even looking for it.
Ā II.
Ā Sheās young and naive and sweet sixteen, and he comes to her with a last minute cake with no birthday wishes or even her name written on it. No smiles, no presents, no happy birthdays . Just him and the ever-present smoke of his cigarette, him and the icy green of his eyes baring her soul naked. He pushes the box into her arms and turns around to leave, and in her haste to keep him her hand misses his forearm, closing around a lock of silver hair instead.Ā
He groans. She glares. They scowl at each other for the longest time.
Until he resigns himself, clicking his tongue and sighing heavily as he lets the girl lead him inside the apartment. He stands by the window the whole time, smoking into the night while she throws glances at him over her half-finished cherry cake.
āWhereās my gift?ā She asks him later, when theyāre both done with the pretenses.
āThe cakeās your gift.ā
āA cake is a cake!ā She objects matter-of-factly, āI want a gift.ā
āI donāt have a gift.ā He states coldly.Ā
āBut I want one.ā
Gin curses under his breath, losing his patience and crushing his cigarette against the window frame. āListen, you ungrateful brat! I donātā ā
But her hands are cupping his face and pulling him close to her, close enough so her lips reach his in one sloppy kiss, and two, and threeā and soon his hands are on the small of her back and sheās tasting the bitterness of his cigarettes. He kisses her with a kind of hunger that melts her teenage heart away, and she holds to the back of his shoulders in fear of drowning at the intensity of her own feelings.Ā
ā You⦠ā Gin breathes against her flushed cheek, chest heaving, ā You are in so much trouble. ā
Ā III.
Ā Heās at the top of the world at just sixteen, a world renowned detective with Japanās heart stuffed in his back pocket. He sits next to her in classes and walks her home after school, their shoulders brushing in the most innocuous way as they both blush profusely. He dreams of her soft hands and her lips, of her hair sprawled on his shoulder andĀ her sweet whispers against his ear. He dreams of love while staring right into its cobalt eyes.
āWatch out!ā He says, pulling her into his chest. A speeding car zooms by just inches away from where Ran stands, and Shinichi curses under his breath at the offender. He memorizes the plate number at a glance and makes a mental note to do a background check later.
āT-Thank you.ā His blushing girlfriend-to-be peeps from his embrace, and his face goes through all shades of red before letting her go in embarrassment.
Ran smiles at him, not like she did the first time when he fell in love with her ā softer. Itās shy and just the right amount of mischievous, her eyes refusing to meet his as her fingers play with a rebellious lock of her ebony hair.
God, he could kiss her.
Sonoko catches up to them.
Ā IV.
Ā She falls out of love as fast as she fell into it, yet heās got no intention of letting her walk away. He takes everything away from her ā her mind, her heart, her sister⦠and now heās gunning for her life.Ā
She refuses to grant him that satisfaction.
Ā V.
Ā Heās back to being six and sheās worlds away from his reach, and he fills in the blanks of their love story with hollow promises he canāt be sure heāll ever be able to fulfill. Little by little, he finds himself entangled in a web of lies that becomes his new reality, and the fairy tale love he once lived has now morphed into the pettiest urban legend, so much that he doesnāt know what to believe anymore ā in the perfect past, this twisted present, or the uncertain future.Ā
Ā VI.
Ā She thinks that the boy is naive to a foolish extent, even though heās about her age and a certified genius. He holds himself to a level of righteousness thatās frankly laughable, adamant not to let the world shake his faith in fairness and justiceā so much that he doesnāt hold a grudge against her, so much that he vows to keep her safe.
She doesnāt expect to fall in love as soon as sheās fallen out of it.Ā
Even when sheās never within periphery and heās got his eyes fixed on his angel, she canāt help when the tiniest sparkle sets a fire ablaze in her heart.
Could this be some sort of sick pattern?
Ā VII.
Ā He pretends he doesnāt notice, but she makes it hard to play dumb.Ā
The girl walks into his life like a hurricane that turns his world upside down. Sheās cold and manipulative in a way that sends shivers down his spine, yet thereās something between her annoying self-sacrificing tendencies and her cynical view of the world that he finds quite peculiarā enough to decide that thereās more than meets the eye, and after scratching the surface of the walls sheās put around her to keep herself safe from the world, he comes to the conclusion that sheās worth putting his whole faith into, even if that means heās bound to get burned. Still, her eyes are softer when they rest on him and her laughter more genuine when sheās laughing at with him.Ā
He grows attached to the girl with the evil eyes and snide remarks, to the uncanny friendship and shared secrets. She, with all her pessimism and morbid jokes, becomes a pillar in the ruins of his life, a totem of sanity in the madness of their situation.Ā
He tells himself that it couldnāt be, that such a⦠remarkably interesting person wouldnāt harbor feelings of fondness for him. Even when she stares at him for longer than it takes him to noticeĀ and puts her life on a thread to weave him out of dangerous situations, even when she says she likes him and immediately takes it back⦠itās just out of the question.
Besides, he canāt help that he wants her to stay.
Ā VIII.
Ā She wonāt dare call it love, but sheās willing to entertain the idea. This time, itās her choice to make. Love has knocked her off her feet before, and sheās done falling for impossible prospects that are too emotionally unavailable to fall back for her.Ā
Higoās sweet disposition is a novelty she canāt quite get used to, for sheās never known love to give back or burn this slow. He takes her hand and walks her to the quietness, leading her through the darkness of her own night. With her back against his chest and the reassurance of safe haven in his embrace, she finds the strength to fight away her demons, to heal.
He reminds her of herself in so many ways, that maybe by loving him for what he is she might eventually fall in love with herself too.
Ā IV.
Ā He tells himself heās happy for her, even though happy right now means driving himself insane over the thought of them. Jealousy is unbecoming of him, and it shows in the mean-spirited comments and short text conversations with her. Itās apparent in his vacancy during get-togethers, in his reluctance to make eye contact with her lover and the sudden unfounded disdain towards Big Osaka.Ā
Kudo Shinichi is, to no oneās surprise, jealous.
It isnāt like him to behave like this. He shouldnāt be bitter and petty over something that doesnāt concern him. But something went wrong in the process of never acknowledging her feelings for him and her actually moving on from them, something that felt like sheer betrayal to him.Ā
He knows. He knows heās being unfair... and selfish. Itās not something he can help.
But sheās happy, and he keeps telling himself heās happy that sheās happy , even when heās not happy at all.
Ā V.
Ā She watches them fall apart as if they were made to be broken, and the sight is both terrifying and fascinating at the same time. It all collapses at once like a house of cards, not leaving them a chance to find footing until the pieces of them are all scattered on the ground.Ā
It makes her question whatās the point of falling in love if all love does is die. And if the greatest love of all time has also fallen, is there even hope for them to make it last?
She holds on to her lover like she would to a candle in the night.Ā
Ā VI.
Ā Heās twenty six and still oblivious of the concept of good timing, so the moment he hears the news he canāt help but rush to her house with bags of unsolicited take out and a bunch of rented movies. She greets him with her signature panda eyes and a red nose to match, but he pretends he doesnāt notice ā force of habit, one might say.
āHeard you broke up.ā He says like a dumbass, and she honestly wants to slam the door on his nose and give him a piece of her mind.
She doesnāt.Ā
Sheās done crying and her dumbass detective does come to her with sweet offerings that sheās frankly too emotionally drained to decline. And if sheās honest with herself, she kinda missed his company and his stupid face. So she lets him in and endures six hours straight of uncensored zombie apocalypse films with her head resting on his shoulder while listening to his over-enthusiastic plot commentary.
VII.
Ā They are thirty six and the walk back home feels longer than ever before, but the snow is freshly paved on their side of the road and the stars the only witness, so he pulls her under a dim streetlight just to see the face he knows so well, and his fingers find the familiar path that trails from her cheek to the hollow of her neck ā one step and heās closer, warm hands on her shivering skin; two steps and her body melds against his chest; three steps and their lips are home.
.

.
They are timeless and non linear and out of touch with the universeās rules, because if love is supposed to be a continuous unfluctuating thing, they have failed in every aspect to prove it. She falls for him first and she falls for him last, and for her he never ever, ever stops falling.Ā
Love, as they know it, is a curious thing. It comes and goes and bends and changes, and for whatās worth, it binds them.

A/N: Thanks for reading! Reviews are extremely appreciated but if you want to ask about Chasing Clouds, please do it in the actual Chasing Clouds fic. It kinda hurts when the only comments a new fic gets are people asking about an old fic :(
