I'm so sorry — i asked for opinions on the discord and forgot to actually answer the ask. Will you forgive? I have been busy preparing my own CoAiWeek tributes! 😭

Also we all got sidetracked into discussing the latest Manga file(1165) spoilers. 🫣 It had been a while since canon threw Haibara fans such food.

ANYWAY...

Some people didn't see a distinction - recalling Shinichi also having more detailed shrinking scenes...

I personally think a lot of it is to do with narrative perspective, focus and distance.

Shinichi's first shrinking was mostly first person — we fade to black and literally see through his eyes as the poison takes hold and he awakes to the guards finding him.

Shinichi's second shrinking occurs in the case introducing Heiji, a teenage detective investigating where his rival vanished off to. It's also a moment for Ran to get reassurance that Shinichi is alive. At this point Shinichi also doesn't know that his return is temporary... This time we get the external view of the friends and how his disappearance affects them. He's there one minute, the next... GONE. It's really dramatic.

In the manga, Sherry's initial shrinking is described in the background of a panel discussing the event — it makes sense for the anime to fully animate that sequence. Watching a character talk is not as exciting as what they're describing, and the drama of it means having Haibara talking on top of it might diminish the impact.

Haido city hotel is the first time we see Shiho shrink back —and the theme here is very much about vulnerability and danger. How better do you show that than by having the transformation sequence end with a gun to the head?

In contrast, we don't see Shinichi shrinking after the case with his doppleganger (episode 523?) afaik — ( I don't actually watch the anime, just the movies...) There's no narrative benefit to showing the scene there. Similar for Shiho's appearance in episode 700 (the camping trip with the hut on fire) — we already know what happens when she shrinks, and the focus was more on how hard she needs pushed to actually resort to the antidote, rather than its effects on her.

Confession gone wrong.

When I was like 18, I drew a lot. Most of my friends were into manga and we all put tons of effort into learning how to draw. When we moved into our current place, I stumbled upon this old manga pages I drew and it made me laugh so hard. I only faintly remembered having this idea, and I didn't even realize I had drawn so many pages, let alone what my actual plan was. I never did anything like this again either. I prefer drawing single illustrations (which I still so sometimes) or just writing fanfiction.

Anyway, the story is obviously a fairy tale parody of Detective Conan. Prince Shinichi is supposed to marry Princess Ran, but he gets attacked by evil fairies on his way there. One of the fairies (Shiho) sabotages the spell, so instead of dying, the prince shrinks. And yeah...

I've been a CoAi shipper since forever, so of course he would have had to team up with the untrustworthy, sarcastic herb witch and marry her in the end, as any good CoAi story goes xD It's a law. I have no idea what possessed me back then. If anyone wants to steal this plot, please be my guest!

These pages are 20 years old and finding them just made my day :D It’s totally a coincidence that the pages featuring Shiho look the best while the rest isn't even finished. But honestly, the absolute best part is that I drew Vodka in what is basically a swimsuit?? WTH rofl

When I first started writing my fanfic A Walk in the Dark 10 years ago I had exactly 3 initial ideas. Just 3 scenes living rent-free in my head that I wanted to build a whole story around.

I fully wrote out 2 of them right away, but couldn't get the 3rd one right, so I postponed it. To make it a real story, I brainstormed more, released up to chapter 6, but only included one of those original scenes (chapter 2). And then I vanished for some time, lol.

Now, years later, I FINALLY finished that stubborn 3rd scene. I love it so much! It will be in the story soon (probably chapter 12 or 13, the story is still evolving). I was SO happy.

But.

The last scene. The one I had fully written out from the very beginning and loved so much, that set the mood and the setting... it doesn’t fit the timeline anymore. It’s just not working anywhere. I spent the past day trying everything to force it into different spots, rewriting parts of it or parts of other scenes to make it fit, but there is no way. It crushed me a bit xD

But I guess that’s what happens when a story evolves organically around your characters. What I have now makes me happy and actually makes the story better. Forcing that last initial idea into it would only hurt it, but man... I had a hard time accepting that yesterday.
