personally, i do like gency quite a bit! mostly because it has a much better chance of becoming canon in comparison to pretty much every other possible overwatch ship out there.

but, as always, i have to look at each character individually first. i’ve already looked at genji here, so i’ll just focus on mercy:

angela ziegler’s parents died in war - we don’t know how old she was when that happened, but we can assume it was when she was relatively young, as she devoted her entire life to medicine and the prevention of war

angela is the same age as jesse mccree - and was in overwatch when he was in blackwatch. meaning she joined overwatch when she was seventeen or even younger.

she is a prodigy in medicine and independently developed applied nanobiology, which saved countless lives and vastly improved life expectancy

keep in mind she was a renown surgeon in a Swiss hospital at this point - and how old was she? seventeen or younger.

there’s a lot of intrigue surrounding angela, especially how she seemingly hasn’t aged a day since her late teens/early twenties. there are several theories for this.

in tdlh, angela injected herself with nanomachines that constantly maintain her cells and themselves, running a high risk of internal hemorrhaging and other unpredictable dangers - but keeping her alive indefinitely. for all intents and purposes, angela is essentially immortal.

from what i understand, this theory is a common one.

if this is true, it can be inferred that angela tested her own nanobiology on herself.

(also she’s immortal, that’s kind of a thing i shouldn’t just brush over. if anything, genji is possibly the best match for her because she can maintain him indefinitely and neither of them will ever die. you know, unless something catastrophic happens.)

angela, in tdlh canon, is the most mentally and emotionally stable overwatch agent. she’s a professional who knows very well how to healthily deal with depression, anxiety, PTSD, so on and so forth - and so she has. she may not agree with overwatch’s militaristic approach to everything, but she also understands that that approach is what allows her to save more lives in the process. all in all: angela is thoughtful and is in a good place for a relationship, should she choose to start one.

(as a personal tidbit, i personally think she wouldn’t, mostly because it might serve as a distraction to her craft… although it would be healthy of her to take a break.)

genji, meanwhile, is a total mental and emotional wreck when he’s first brought back to life. as referenced in the past genji post, he would be totally unsuitable and unreliable as a partner, prone to violent outbursts and saddled with crippling insecurity, rage, and guilt. it’s only after years of wandering and learning from under zenyatta’s tutelage that genji becomes the person he used to be, and it’s from that point that i also think he would be in a good place for a relationship

which is what’s most appealing about gency in the first place: they’ve had years upon years to build up a positive rapport. it’s evident in spawn and dialogue lines between that this is indeed the case, and that they look upon each other as close friends and colleagues.

still, there are roadblocks - surmountable ones, of course. genji would be reserved in starting a relationship, considering he’s neither human nor omnic, but i have no doubt that he’d be interested in one if the chance arose. further, genji owes angela his life, which is a debt i doubt he’ll ever forget - and if he and angela do pursue a relationship, it would be a little weird at first. angela would make him communicate about it eventually, but until then, he would be constantly second-guessing himself on the whole situation: am i doing this because i want to, or because i believe angela wants to?

and then, of course, there would be the adjustment period wherein genji and angela would have to actually open up to each other, rather than genji just dumping his problems all on zenyatta and angela internalizing her problems completely. but, like i said: all surmountable roadblocks.
