I decided to give some love to my Italian herbs today! Left to right: thyme, rosemary, sage, oregano.

This photo shows the planter after I trimmed several stalks from the left side of the oregano, which were crowding the sage.

Thyme was also looking really unruly so I trimmed it, too, especially the right side where I want the rosemary to have more room to grow. I also pinched some of the stalks just above a node, where two stalks will develop now that the main, single stalk is gone! (I didn’t do this to the oregano because it’s already the right size.)

The sage looks about right to me, so I left it alone.

It’s been about 5 weeks since I transplanted my snap peas, and they have grown a lot! Some of them--actually, a lot of them--are starting to look not so healthy. Kind of yellow, with some browning leaves. I removed the 3 worst-affected sprouts today. I watered them a lot last week because it was hot and sunny, and then the weather got rainy, so I have a hunch that they are just too wet. If that’s the case, they should start looking a lot better by the end of the week, because we’re expecting some warm weather that will help dry them out.

Here’s my herb container, 11 weeks apart. I bought and planted these plants during a warm spell a couple months ago, thinking that winter was over, but I really jumped that gun! We’ve since had a few more frosts and a lot of rain, but we are starting to get more and more sun and warmth now, which is what these herbs like, so they are growing a lot!

The oregano wasn’t doing well at first. I believed it to be too waterlogged, so I moved into one of the tomato pots, which had very well-drained soil, and it started to do much better. It was probably 8 weeks before I moved it back into this rectangular planter, and it’s still doing just fine! Unlike the oregano, the sage has been fine without any special treatment. The beautiful rosemary seems to have hardly grown at all, and I believe that is due to a lack of sun.

Here are some pics of my tomato plants. The first is from 4/18, when I transplanted them from 4″ containers to 6″ containers. The others are from today, and you can see how much they’ve grown in those 12 days! Remember the tomato house I built a while ago? They’ve already outgrown that space! And they smell SO good.

I was waiting to move them outside until the weather got sunnier and warmer, but when that happened last week and I tried putting them outside for a while, it turned out to bee too much for them! They immediately started to wilt, despite being perfectly well-watered. I know you’re supposed to gradually harden off tomatoes, but I guess I don’t know how!

I tried again yesterday, when I again moved them outside into the rain and cool. They’ve been outside for a day and a half and are showing no signs of poor health.

On Wednesday we’re expecting warm, sunny weather, so I will supervise them closely and hope they are better able to stand up to the sun this time.

I really wish I knew which variety each of these are, but I still have no clue. I recently made a mistake on that front: I decided to remove flower buds from the plants so they would focus their energy on foliage and roots, but I realized that if I had let them develop, the shape of the fruit would have told me which variety each plant is. Whoops! I am already learning a lot this year about growing tomatoes that I missed out on last year.
