Happy Valentine’s day @clood ! I hope you enjoy the fic I wrote you, I had a lot of fun writing it :)
“Are we lost?”
“Did you take a map?”
“Did you?”
“Nah, I figured we’d just go to whatever areas we thought looked cool.”
“Yeah, then we’re lost.”
~
In any other situation, Killua would have smirked to himself at the absurdity of the situation. It was humorous, really. Gon Freecss, as outdoorsy and resourceful as he was, lost on a nature trail.
It wasn’t exactly a date. Well, he hadn’t called it one, so it wouldn’t even be in a technical sense of the word either. Killua waved away the semantics in his head. Nevermind that, how hard could it be?
Gon had been on tons of dates before, or so he’d said. That’s why this one had to be absolutely special, something he’d remember for a while. Afterall, Gon was, in his own words, “so excited to meet up again!”, he couldn’t screw this up.
But Killua had a plan. He smirked to himself. What was better than exploring an old forest filled with both giant trees and mushrooms alike. Today would go perfectly.
~
While the trail was easy to walk on, Gon had a keen eye for spotting interesting animals further in the brush, so they’d taken quick detours to check them out. The forest was old, and rather strange. With mushrooms towering high up into the canopy, he shouldn’t have been as surprised when he saw the squirrel Gon had found, little brown mushrooms sprouting out of its back. He’d seen a few with Alluka the last time he was here, but only out of the corner of his eye. Seeing one up close was different. It was strange, eerie, but Gon seemed so fascinated by it. That was one thing Killua would never understand. But it made Gon happy, so he didn’t mind.
“Why do you care about being lost anyways, it’s not like you’re sticking to a trail,” joked Killua.
Gon stopped in his tracks. He looked up at the sky, golden eyes squinting. Then, he held his hand out palm up, waiting.
“What are you doing?”
“Look,” said Gon, holding his hand back to Killua. He could spot the faintest glint of rain droplets “It’s lightly drizzling, but I think it’s going to pick up soon.”
Killua’s heart fell. Rain? No, no, it couldn’t rain, not today of all days! This was completely and utterly unfair. It was the first time he had time to hang out with Gon in months. Between traveling with Alluka, and Gon training his nen, they hadn’t had time to formally catch up in a while. Of course it was going to get ruined by something completely out of his control. Go figure.
“You didn’t take a map, did you?” asked Gon. Killua felt his cheeks burn red with embarrassment. Now was not a good time to tell Gon he didn’t take a map because he wanted to impress him with his directional memory skills. Which… would have been helpful if the boast had some merit to it.
“No, Gon, I didn’t take a map,” snapped Killua. “We already went over this.” Killua felt a pang of guilt as Gon’s smile fell. He’d skipped over the question earlier, but it had all just come out at once, and a lot more forceful than he meant it to.
“Obviously I didn’t know, otherwise I would have asked,” Gon said back under his breath, avoiding eye contact with Killua as he continued down the path. Killua felt a chill wash over him, not just from the wind picking up. No, no, no, this was not supposed to go like this.
“Stupid fucking clouds,” mumbled Killua. Gon picked up the pace, but as they traversed through the forest, the trees began to look taller, wider, more gnarled and ancient. The mushrooms were more integrated into the bark, some of the larger shelf mushrooms growing to the size of a dinner table. He definitely would have recognized this if they passed it before. No, Gon wasn’t leading them out of the forest. Killua held his hand above his face to protect against some of the incoming rain droplets.
“Hey, Gon, I think you’re going the wrong way-”
“We need to find somewhere to sit this out,” Gon called out back to him, turning around just long enough to shout it to him. Killua jogged a bit, making sure not to trip over any zigzagged roots or overgrown plants to try to catch up to him.
Why was Gon moving at an exceptionally fast pace?
Was he avoiding him?
Even if it wasn’t on purpose, it still felt like it. Killua felt a sharp pang in his chest. Something felt wrong.
As they went deeper into the older part of the forest, the overgrown canopy and large taupe and russet mushroom heads provided brief shielding from the rain before it began to pick up, droplets hitting the ground faster and harder the longer they walked. The dirt was quickly turning into a thick sludge of mud. Killua grimaced as his foot slipped and he almost lost his balance.
“Fucking mud,” Killua said under his breath. “Literally why did it have to rain. The trail was so nice before.” Gon either didn’t hear him, or ignored him. He was much further ahead now, going off the trail and through the brush. Maybe he didn’t hear him. He probably didn’t. But that didn’t stop him from feeling uncomfortable about it.
Like sunshine, hearing Gon’s voice through the rain immediately snapped him out of his worry.
“Killua, c’mere it should be dry,” said Gon, beckoning with his arm. Killua pushed a branch out of the way and let it go too quickly, droplets of water spraying him from the leaves where they’d collected. He maneuvered his way through some of the brush to catch up to Gon who was a good ways ahead of him deeper away from the trail.
Gon stood next to the base of a giant gnarled tree on the edge of a ten foot vertical drop. Judging by its twisted roots and obscure angle, it had likely survived being uprooted at some point, then prospered if it’s height and trunk thickness had anything to prove. Each root was thicker than his entire torso, Killua noticed as he rested his arm against one.
“Let’s wait here in case the storm picks up more,” said Gon, pointing to a hole on the side of the roots. Killua climbed up the side, hoisting himself up to where Gon was. The roots had intertwined to create a cage-like barrier, almost reminiscent of a dome, or a small cave, tiny mushrooms peppered along the outside. “It’ll be a tight fit but I think we’ll both have room.”
“I guess,” said Killua, watching as Gon awkwardly maneuvered himself into the root-prison. If this is what it took to avoid getting soaked out in the middle of nowhere, then fine. He followed Gon, making sure to keep his head ducked as he crouched inside. There was barely enough room for him to sit on his knees. Killua scrunched up his nose as he realized his shorts were already muddied.
“Damn it, I’m soaking wet. Rain sucks,” he whined, trying to consider whether or not it was worth it to just give up and sit down on the ground. He looked to Gon, hoping to see the other boy crack a smile in solidarity, but instead he sat with his knees pulled to his chest, looking out at the torrential downpour Killua was more than happy to have avoided thanks to Gon’s quick thinking.
He ran his hand through his hair, shaking out the rain droplets. He scrunched up his nose. He hadn’t even considered it until this moment, but it was humid out, and having rain-soaked hair was certainly not making a good impression on Gon. He sees him for the first time in a few months, and this is what he gets? Killua mentally groaned. He must have looked like he’d taken a shower in his clothes.
“This sucks,” said Killua, tossing a rock against the inside of the tree. Gon continued to look out at the rain.
“I hate this.”
No response. “How much longer do you think it’s going to rain?” Silence. “This wasn’t even on the forecast, I swear, I checked it earlier and if I knew the conditions were going to be miserable I would have-”
“The thing making me miserable right now is you!”
Gon’s words were a dagger to the heart and his gaze was no less intense. Killua flinched. The problem here was… him?
“I just, I thought…” His words were scrambled, nothing was coming out in the right order. He wanted to look away, look at anything other than the pained expression on Gon’s face, but he was stuck in the moment. I wanted everything to be perfect and it sucked.
“I had this day planned, I specifically chose the forest, and I saw there was a 20% chance of rain a week ago and forgot to check again….” What was he doing? He’d already officially taken Gon on the shittiest date possible, then pissed him off, he was digging his hole deeper and deeper, might as well use an excavator to save time.
“Killua, I don’t care about the forest.”
The words rang in his ears. He didn’t… Care? About the forest???
“I thought you love forests,” said Killua, eyebrows knit together. Gon sighed. There was a pause. Killua squeezed his hands together, feeling the tips of his fingernails go into his skin. This was it, Gon was preparing to tell him that not only had Killua ruined the trip, that he didn’t even care to go on it in the first place. Of course, he had forests back home on Whale Island, he didn’t need to come all the way out here.
“You’re right, I do like them. But I just wanted to spend time with you,” said Gon, pulling his knees closer as he leaned against the side of the bark. “We could be anywhere, it doesn’t matter.” He gazed pensively off into the rain.
Now it was Killua’s turn to sigh with relief. Gon wanted to spend time with him! He didn’t know what to say, the words refused to form on his lips as he stared at Gon.
“I guess I tried to make this perfect, I wanted today to be perfect,” said Killua, but the word left a sour taste in his mouth. “But you can’t have a perfect day with this amount of rain.”
“It’s just a day, why did it have to be perfect,” joked Gon, picking up the little stone Killua had thrown over earlier to look at in his hands. Killua sighed.
“It doesn’t matter.” But it did matter. He wanted to tell Gon, but it was so embarrassing.
“Killua, just tell me,” said Gon, tossing the stone back to him. Killua took the little stone off the ground, and rubbed his thumb over the back of it.
“I didn’t want you to think our outing sucked, especially since we hadn’t seen each other in a while. I guess I was more pissed off at the weather and didn’t want you to think today being terrible was my fault,” said Killua, looking out at the rain, which showed no signs of letting up. “But I did a shit job at that, didn’t I?”
Gon was silent, golden eyes wide as he opened his mouth to speak, then closed it. Killua
“Hey, Killua?” asked Gon, finally breaking the silence. “I wasn’t having a terrible time. Besides, we can just talk, I still don’t really know what you’ve been up to lately.” Oh, right. Gon even said that he was more interested in spending time together than sightseeing. The corner of Killua’s mouth turned up into a smile.
“Well, I traveled around with Alluka for a bit. Being a hunter does have its perks, I got us easy travel and tickets to go to whatever sites she wanted to check out,” said Killua. “I’ve actually been to this forest before, she thought the fungal squirrels were so cute.”
“I’ve been thinking about that, actually,” said Gon, turning away from the rain to look back at Killua. “Do you think the mushrooms are separate from the squirrels or that they’re one organism?”
“There’s a difference?” asked Killua. Gon nodded.
“Well if it’s one organism then I’d assume the fungus achieved sentience, but if not, then either the mushrooms have a beneficial relationship to the squirrels or they’re sapping them of nutrients,” suggested Gon.
“So… like a zombie squirrel.” Killua’s face contorted into a cringe that Gon couldn’t help but laugh at.
“Kind of, if it’s a parasite, yeah,” Gon said between laughs. “I wonder if we’ll get infected.” That was enough for a shiver to go down Killua’s spine, causing him to tense up. Disgusting!
“No way!” he said, crossing his arms. “You’re just making stuff up.”
“You’d probably have to ingest some of the spores anyways,” said Gon, poking at a mushroom on the ground where they were sitting. Killua looked in horror. “Oh I’m kidding! I looked it up before we went, because I was curious. We’re not going to turn into mushrooms.”
“Imagine that, though, we meet up with Alluka for dinner later and I’m sprouting ‘shrooms,” said Killua, smiling through his grimace.
“Endless supply for cooking-”
“Stopppp,” Killua lightheartedly whined. “Though this would make a fun Greed Island side effect if you think about it.”
“A mushroom that, when eaten, causes you to sprout more mushrooms?” suggested Gon. “Don’t know why anyone would eat it, though.”
“You could put it into someone’s food to poison them,” said Killua nonchalantly. Gon rolled his eyes.
“I’ll make sure to pitch it to Ging next time I call him.”
“Does he call you often?” asked Killua. Gon shrugged. Killua tried to read his expression, was this a sensitive topic for him? Maybe Gon was just being awkward.
“He’s busy, I mostly just call him when I have questions relating to hunter affairs,” said Gon. “I’m actually considering giving him a call soon, I kind of wanted to get some advice on what type of hunter to be.”
“Well, if you ask me, how about a magical beast hunter?” asked Killua. Gon’s eyes lit up. “What, it’s obvious! You like all the weird creepy critters around here, and besides, isn’t Kite a beast hunter too?”
“No, no, I’m not surprised,” said Gon, smile creeping up on his face. “That’s just the type of hunter I had in mind, so I’m just glad that you suggested it too. You know me too well!”
“What type of hunter do you think I would be?” asked Killua. Gon furrowed his brows together.
“Hmm…” he thought out loud. “Hmmmmm…..”
“Stupid,” teased Killua.
“Hey! I was thinking!” exclaimed Gon, pretending to be offended, crossing his arms over his chest. “Do you even have an idea yourself?” Killua shrugged.
“You caught me, I haven’t given it much thought at all, I’ve been too busy just traveling with Alluka,” he said. Gon gave him a soft smile.
“Maybe you can be a destination hunter? You know, find all the really cool places to go and see?” he suggested. “And we could work together, you’d pick the sites and I’d find the wildlife.”
“Well, I’m not really sure I want that to be my final designation-”
“We don’t have to officially declare for a while. And besides,” Gon’s cheeks flushed the slightest of pinks. “I just wanted an excuse for us to hang out again. You know, like before.”
Oh.
Oh.
“Ah, yeah, I’ll see if I can fit it into my schedule…” joked Killua, taking out his phone and pretending to scroll through it.
“Stop, I know you’re free, I asked Alluka when we were back in town,” said Gon, smugly. Killua looked off to the side, away from Gon, cheeks reddened.
“Okay, I guess we can give it a trial run, but I don’t want you holding me back,” teased Killua. “Alluka and I are seasoned professionals, we’ve been traveling for a while. Think you can keep up with our pace?”
“For sure,” said Gon, giving him a little thumbs up. Killua smirked. But out of the corner of his eye, he noticed something he hadn’t before. Huh. Wait a second.
“Hey, it’s not even raining anymore!” said Killua, looking out through the roots of the tree. He looked back at Gon who had mischief just plastered all over his face. “You knew that.”
“We were having a good time talking, and besides, it’s like a cage made out of tree, how cool is that!” exclaimed Gon. Killua rolled his eyes, before hoisting himself out of the mess of gnarled roots.
“Only you would find that cool.”
“I’m the only one that needs to!” said Gon, letting Killua help him out of their resting spot. “I’m just glad it didn’t flood.”
“It could have flooded with us in there?” exclaimed Killua. Gon shrugged, scratching the back of his head.
“Maybe.”
“Maybe?”
“Yeah, if there was a lot of rain. But we’re so far off the ground level unless we got a few feet of rain we’re probably okay,” said Gon.
“That’s a lot different than a maybe, Gon,” scoffed Killua. Gon ignored his assertion.
“Hey, Killua?” asked Gon.
“Yeah?”
“I still think today was perfect. I know you hated the weather but… We haven’t talked like this in a while. It’s good to see you again,” said Gon, beaming smile. “Just like old times, right?”
It was like a weight had been lifted off his shoulder. That’s right, they were just talking, like normal. It wasn’t strained, or awkward informal politeness, they could just say whatever, back in the groove.
“I think it was perfect too.”

What are some of ur like, most mundane head cannons about Gon and Killua? Like I see Killua as the kind of guy that drinks coffee even though it doesn’t affect him just bc he likes the way the mug warms his hands in the morning and Gon as the guy who will carry the spider outside but not before holding it really close to Killua’s face to try and make him scream... pls Liv, bless me with boring, domestic killugon :’)
Oh my god wait I have another: because of all the strain put on his joints by the classique zoldyck torture and his lightning nen, killua develops arthritis/joint pain super early on and so gon will always draw him a hot bath or warm his knuckles on cold/rainy days and so even tho gon would expect bad weather days to be killuas least favorite it’s actually his most bc that means gon will be attending to him and holding him all day long (2/2)
oh my gosh you are speaking my language with mundane, domestic killugon content!!!!! like we all know i love angst & drama but sometimes you just want something cozy & nice uwu also i am literally always weak for a hc in which a character has chronic pain so i love that headcanon about joint pain so so much
okay a few silly domestic killugon hcs:
1. killua is incredibly indecisive in restaurants so he always has gon pick something for him. he doesn’t even look at the menu & leaves it totally up to gon’s discretion and he somehow manages to nail it every single time because they just know each other that well. he’ll even be able to tell what killua is in the mood for on any given day. it’s practically a superpower.
2. killua gets very frustrated watching gon constantly dying in video games & will always volunteer to beat the hard levels for him & gon literally always refuses because winning it on his own is a matter of pride. he will, however, allow killua to give him advice/strategy tips, but he draws the line at any sort of help with the actual gameplay.
3. on the subject of games, they are both complete lunatics when it comes to competitiveness in board games. there is no such thing as love or commitment or devotion in settlers of catan. but the second the game is over, they drop it completely. it honestly freaks people out to play with them sometimes because they are completely ruthless during the game but somehow totally let it go the moment they’re done.
4. i acknowledge that this is cliche but you just know that gon picks wildflowers for killua if he spots one outside & killua presses them in books to keep them. you just know that happens all the time.
5. gon tends to run very warm, while killua tends to run very cold. this is the ideal situation for cuddling, but it also means that they are constantly fighting over the thermostat.
thank you for giving me a chance to talk about silly killugon goodness it was so fun & really really brightened my day!!!!! xo
