Cloning Machine: Imitation can certainly be the sincerest form of flattery, but the article in @incmagazine this photograph was made for tells the other side of the story- The Knockoff. When Photo Editor, @travisruse , came to me with a few snippets from the story, a cloning machine seemed the visual answer. Using aerospace parts from a local junk dealer, three flying flats, some scrap lumber and some whimsy, my assistants and I built this retro looking “machine” over the course of three days. Coloring was very important and strategized to make the key element, women’s pink stiletto pumps, pop out against the institutional green and silver of the set. Lighting was simple- one head bouncing off the white ceiling of the studio, with two small grid spots aimed at each shoe, and the whole set surrounded with white “V” flats. The electrical effect coming from the conduit towards the shoes on the right was created in a practical way using milk plexiglass, spray painted with black paint with the “lightning” bolt etched into it. The plexiglass became part of a small handmade soft box fashioned with a speed light that was positioned and activated during the double exposure. Dry ice in a small cup was placed behind the shoes and a small amount of water was added at the right moment. Because the subject was basically architecture, I opted to capture using a Toyo 4x5 film camera and 210mm lens in order to control perspective and keep the lines of the set straight.
