On Friday, January 24, 2025, Tuhifadhi Mchanga Initiative and Mazingira Urban Networking had the privilege of being hosted by Nancy Wambui from Reclaim your Soil Association a valued collaborator of TMI, at her demo farm in Limuru. This insightful visit was organized by Ms Mumo Meli our founder, this was a follow-up to our World Soil Day event of December 5, 2024, where community members expressed interest in witnessing nature based solutions to prevent soil degradation such as the use of Vetiver Grass among other sustainable practices. Nancy introduced us to Mr Kinuthia, a champion farmer who embraces agroecological principles and regenerative agriculture on his farm.
During the tour on the farm, Mr Kinuthia and Mrs Kariuki highlighted:🌻
1. The importance of planning and designing your farm, incorporation of medicinal trees in the farm wood lot area is important to increase biodiversity.🪴
2. Over-cropping and intercropping for soil protection and sustained yields using Vetiver as mulch🍂
3. Establishment of Vetiver and strategic points to plant the grass in reference to alleys created around the farm to collect water🏞️
4. The importance of creating retention and drainage dish systems especially if the farm is located in sloppy areas💧
5. Importance of agronomic principles that are friendly to fruit trees in his orchard that was full of trees combined with other beneficial crops. 🌾
His wisdom and dedication reaffirmed our commitment to promoting soil conservation and sustainable agriculture practices.
This enriching excursion🙂↕️ not only deepened our knowledge as a team but also inspired our vision to create a project demo farm where we can host and share these impactful lessons with you too.🌼🍄🌳😎
