Just watched the first legend of hei and while i definitely need to watch it a second time (distracted by the quality of the film and how it was made lmao) i was astonished by the fact that it was such a quiet film. . . Long swaths of silence. It was nice (i understand why people say american films and tv give them a headache. It really is just the makers not beliving in their audiences ability to not be bored without stimuli every 2 seconds) anyway ill be watching the second one soon where i hear everyones wife is
legend of hei overlaps with spiderverse for me where the first movie’s a huge game changer, and then the second movie leaves it in the dust. something I really like about legend of hei is like you said, the stillness and more prolonged moments, but I especially like how the movies emphasizes minor/background characters. there are a lot that show up for two seconds and they still look like Someone’s Beloved OC, and there are a lot of times where there’s Normal People Living Their Lives And Doing Their Jobs regardless of whether the focus is on them or not, which 1) gets the world feeling pretty fleshed out, 2) adds this great emphasis on cooperation and connection and engagement, again regardless of whether someone is A Main Character. in the second movie we see someone working at the front desk pull up an excel spreadsheet to give someone information; at some point some random employees having A Crazy Day have to cooperate with the main characters to keep everyone alive, and it takes a lot of people working together to pull it off. plus there are SOOOOOO many scenes where people are eating together. a lot of times when people show off animation it’s really flashy action sequences, of which there are plenty, but it really feels like the same degree of attention and care is put into xiao hei tilting his head as he savors a delicious meal… anyway: LEGEND OF HEI 2 MOVIE OF ALL TIME GO SEE WIFE CITY!!!!
