His lycanthropy is not hereditary. Clay was living in Louisiana with his mother when he was attacked. At age 7, he was bitten by Malcolm Danvers. After Malcolm bit Clayton he went on to kill Clayton's mother. Clayton's father had returned home that evening from the military and ended up taking his own life once he saw what happened to his wife. Clayton wasn't found by the police so he was left to live by himself for a year before he was found and adopted by Jeremy Danvers. As he grew up he became an anthropology professor and the pack enforcer. He does what needs to be done for his pack.
