Bug of the Day
This little nugget is a pecan spittlebug, Clastoptera achatina. South of here, it attacks pecan trees, and can sometime reach pest levels. Here where I live, there are no pecan trees, so this species uses hickory trees as a host instead.
Clastoptera with some grade A false peepers on its ass
Alder Spittlebug (Clastoptera obtusa) in Algonquin Provincial Park. This little Bug is a member of the Spittlebugs or Froghoppers (Superfamily Cercopoidea). Its larvae live within a mass of "spittle" until they're ready to molt to their final adult stage. Although called "Alder" Spittlebugs, this species is known to feed on over two dozen different trees and shrubs. . . . . . . . #nature #ontario #clastoptera #clastopteridae #clastopteraobtusa #cercopoidea #spittlebug #froghopper #algonquinprovincialpark #algonquinpark #hemiptera #insecta #macrophotography #macroinsect #ontarionature #insectsofontario #insectsofcanada #macro (at Algonquin Provincial Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEREZHKgstE/?igshid=1g8sv99ue82ts
