David Adler’s French influenced Art Deco design for Clow House (1927) in Lake Forest, Illinois, with interiors by Frances Elkins and Eyre de Lanux. Furnished almost entirely with pieces of his own design, Self Styled was the headline of the feature on architect Max Clendenning's London house in The World of Interiors in 1984. * The marbleised walls of the drawing room suggested an early 80s post-Paint Magic-era that ushered in the new wave of Postmodernism. The mural on the ceiling is after de Chirico (which, depicting a floor, was inspired by a room in the Vatican). To echo the tall and slender shutters the radiators were hung vertically. The Spirit of Postmodernism * Designed by Harrison Cultra for producer and writer Sam Hall and his wife, the actor Grayson Hall, the designer employed a near textbook example of Postmodernism. What, at first, appear to be blocks of stone is in fact translucent sheets of paper applied to painted walls. * In the living room an Empire fauteuil, an antique Japanese table, a 19th-century Thebes stool, and a pre-Columbian pot provide a witty blend of styles and periods. * Propped against the firebox beneath the mantel is a work by Kenneth Evett. The painting above the long sofa is by Sandro Chia.
