CWB: amongst my dust jacket collection are several stylish designs for 1930s mystery novels that are signed with just these initials. Cecil W Bacon (1905-1992) was an illustrator who was born in Hastings, and attended Hastings School of Art in the early 1920s. After working for an advertising agency, he set up on his own in 1929 (just as the Wall Street Crash happened) but he went on to have a successful career, producing a number of designs for London Transport in the 1930s, and during World War II producing propaganda posters for the Ministry of Information. He worked regularly for the Radio Times, for the Post Office Savings Bank and British Railways (the @ltmuseum has a collection of his designs). He was also a master of scraper board and wrote a book on the subject; and himself was the subject of a retrospective at @hastings_museum in 1984. I feel fortunate to have five of his early covers, none of which are (yet) listed on his Wikipedia page. #cwb #cecilwbacon #illustration #design #bookstagram #book #1930sdesign #artdeco #coverart #dustjacket #bookcover #bookcollector #bookcollecting (at Brighton and Hove) https://www.instagram.com/p/CJ0rwybF-qH/?igshid=o9jzbs86a3cc

A 1930s vignette in the seductive haute-couture salon designed by Jacques Grange for Parisian collectors features the finest of its era: a shagreen-covered table by Jean-Michel Frank from the house of Elsa Schiaparelli in front of a Pierre Chareau sofa with tapestry upholstery by Jean Lurçat. The luminous silver-leaf screen is by Pierre Legrain; the lush carpet was the creation of Ernest Boiceau. The octagonal summer dining room in Mona Williams’s villa on Capri, Il Fortino - one of several once owned by the Roman emperor Tiberius - was decorated around 1936 by her husband’s personal secretary, Eddie von Bismarck - whom would become her fourth husband. Repeating the Syrie Maugham themes found in the Williamses’ other homes von Bismark’s dazzling dining room showcased sepia-tone murals featuring acrobats by José Maria Sert from the Williamses’ Long Island residence alongside antique silvered mirrors. * Photo via @michaelbargo A full view of the dining and the villa’s history is featured in @pgayetapp ‘s How They Decorated * #monawilliams #monavonbismarck #ilfortino #villacapri #capri #tiberiusvilla #syriemaugham #eddievonbismarck #josemariasert #baroquemurals #sepia #silveredmirror #eclecticelegance #eclecticglamour #1930sdesign https://www.instagram.com/p/Bsf6MBAlhHp/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=ubty2s1gkrle

The rue de Lota Paris drawing room of milliner Suzanne Talbot (Mme Mathieu Lévy), decorated by Paul Ruaud in 1933 with furniture by Eileen Gray - including lacquered pieces created by her ten years earlier for the same apartment, including her sensual Pirogue daybed. The walls are white, and the floor and door panels are satinized glass. * In the second image, photographed by Baron de Meyer in 1922, Mme Matheiu-Lévy reclines on the Pirogue daybed which Gray conceived for her rue de Lota apartment ten years prior to its redecoration by Ruaud in the ‘30s. * #eileengray #pirogue #piroguedaybed #ruedelota #suzannetalbot #madamemathieulévy #paulruaud #modernism #modernfrench #modernluxe #luxemoderne #artmoderne #artdeco #1930sdesign #1930sglamour #iconicinteriors #iconicdesigners #barondemeyer https://www.instagram.com/p/Bs5aqoKlXfL/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=40j2df5qmua8
