in this post, i talk about the characters in the title. i argue that Clam Girl and Clam Goner are the same person, and originated from Deltarune. i also analyse the different characters and how they're presented. and talk about Pipis at the end.
Clam Girl
Clam Girl appears in Waterfall with Fun Values from 80 to 89, if the player isn't on Genocide.
firstly, interacting with Clam Girl at all changes the dialogue when interacting with a drawer in Sans' workshop.
[normal]
(There's a photo album inside the drawer.)
(There are photos of Sans with a lot of people you don't recognize.)
(He looks happy.)
[if Clam Girl has been interacted with]
(There are photos of... Huh?)
(A card is sticking out from the back flap of the binder.)
(It's a poorly drawn picture of three smiling people.)
(Written on it...)
"don't forget."
this stuff isn't really overly relevant to my analysis, but i think it demonstrates pretty well how Clam Girl is really important and interesting.
and her dialogue is really interesting too.
I'm visiting Waterfall from the city.
Synchronicity..?
My neighbor's daughter looks about your age.
Her name is "Suzy."
I feel like you two should be friends.
You have...
A neighbor's blessing!!!!
Not knowing where I live is no issue.
Fate finds a way.
In life's grand scheme, she might be why you came here in the first place...
[if Undyne is killed]
I sense a disturbance in the nearby aura...
I think you should leave that girl alone.
[True Pacifist ending]
So you never met my neighbor's daughter.
Don't despair.
This world has infinite opportunities.
But there's a limit to the things you can do today.
Accepting this is healthy.
Take my neighbor's blessing!
And consider this blessing for anything you like!
[True Pacifist ending, first time talking to her]
I wanted to tell you about my neighbor's daughter.
But you walked right past me before I could tell you.
Fate has decided that I should not tell you.
we're not told much about Clam Girl's life. she's from New Home. she has a neighbor, Susie's mum. and Susie is about Frisk's age.
Clam Girl believes in New Age-y stuff. through it, it seems like she's right about everything she says.
she predicts Deltarune through her ideas on fate: "Synchronicity...?"
she hints at how Deltarune was planned by Toby first: "In life's grand scheme, she might be why you came here in the first place..."
she can tell if Undyne is killed: "a disturbance in the nearby aura..."
i think, apart from how attuned she is to fate, Clam Girl is a normal, kind person. when she tells Frisk to be friends with Suzy, she's showing she cares about Frisk and her community. she gives us a positive lesson, saying "Accepting this is healthy."
she's also like, a Fun Event. and she changes the dialogue in Sans' workshop. positioned between these mysteries, she feels just innocently half-aware of the deeper forces behind Undertale and Deltarune.
oh and. btw. one of Jockington's lines in Chapter 4 sort of alludes to her.
Don't tell Catti, but I will neutralize, her hex,
With my Sports's Blessing. As a mercy.
Clam Guy
in Hotland, we can find a monster called "clamguy" with retextured versions of Clam Girl's sprite. he's in the room with the water cooler, and appears there after the scene with Undyne.
O, k, k, k, k...
I was thirsty, so I came over from Waterfall to have a drink!
[holding water]
O, k, k, k, k...
Are you carrying that around to look sophisticated?
Because it's not working.
[after pouring water]
O, k, k...
What are you doing with all of that water?
[after emptying the water cooler]
O, k, k, k, k...
So now we have a private pool?
Worse things have happened.
[True Pacifist ending]
O, k, k, k, k...
I'll be able to have a nice drink on the surface.
there's not really much to learn about Clam Guy. he has a very distinctive catchphrase. he's questioning and vaguely mean. he came to Hotland from Waterfall.
Clam Guy is a very different person to Clam Girl. they don't act or talk similarly at all. but despite that, Clam Guy's sprite is a retextured version of Clam Girl's. there aren't really any NPCs like that apart from these two, apart from goners.
his sprite is horizontally flipped from Clam Girl, like he's this mirror version of her.
Clam Goner
on the Nintendo Switch and Xbox versions of Undertale, there's a new Fun Event. if Fun is 81, during the True Pacifist ending Clam Girl has altered dialogue, and becomes "clamgoner".
[True Pacifist ending]
So you never met my neighbor's daughter.
But please don't despair.
Because the time that you will meet her...
[Clam Girl switches to using the Clam Goner sprites. the music stops indefinitely]
... is fast approaching.
[Clam Goner disappears. snd_mysterygo plays]
the Switch version of Undertale was released shortly before Chapter 1 was released, so the "fast approaching" line makes a lot of sense with that context.
snd_mysterygo is also used by mysteryman and Gaster Follower 2, so it's really strongly associated with Gaster.
instead of talking about fate or aura, Clam Goner tells us what they mean as directly as possible: that we'll meet Susie soon. it feels threatening, where Clam Girl tried to be comforting.
i do think, though, that Clam Goner and Clam Girl are the same person. this Fun Event keeps everything else about Clam Girl the same, right? it's just slightly changing the dialogue in this one part. and Clam Girl starts the changed dialogue before Clam Goner, who then finishes the sentence. notice too that the clothes Clam Goner wears are the same as Clam Girl's.
the other goners in Undertale have a lot less to do with their normal counterparts than Clam Goner does. Clam Girl, though, feels like she's from a dream, her existence and identity have been confused and interwoven.
she's a Fun Event, so her existence is down to random chance. she sees the underground as a world of "synchronicity" and "aura" and "infinite possibilities". her kindness feels like her way of gripping onto reality. like, where Goner Kid passively stares into a lake, Clam Girl feels like she's a lot more actively trying to live her life.
while she foreshadows Deltarune, and has higher knowledge, it's only when she becomes Clam Goner- like a dream becoming a nightmare- that this is made really direct. i feel like this aspect to her is really fleeting. and most of the time she's only barely aware of it, only vaguely remembering.
maybe she understands the world the way she does because she can't really grasp her higher way of seeing the world.
i really like the idea that she doesn't really remember everything. it makes a lot of sense with the "don't forget." thing.
Deltarune's Clam Guy
in Deltarune Chapter 2, "clamguy" is introduced. they're called Clam Guy in the files, but their neutral sprite is from Clam Girl and their talking sprite is from Clam Guy.
you can talk to DR!Clam-Guy if you don't wait for Onion in Chapter 1.
Oh hey hey hey hey hey.
Listen up. See that weird circle on the ground?
Yesterday I waited on it, and something weird came out.
Of course it's not yesterday any more, so too bad!
Oh hey hey hey hey hey.
When that thing showed up, I called it weird.
It sunk back into the water... don't think it's coming back.
DR!Clam-Guy is similar, but markedly different, to Undertale's Clam Guy.
Undertale Clam Guy's catchphrase is "O, k, k, k, k..."; DR!Clam-Guy's catchphrase is "Oh hey hey hey hey hey."
Clam Guy is vaguely mean with the sophisticated comment; DR!Clam-Guy is a lot meaner, repeatedly calling Onion weird.
Clam Guy is sort of optimistic, talking about how "worse things have happened", and having a drink on the surface; DR!Clam-Guy is pessimistic, saying "too bad!"
Undertale's Clam Guy explained why he was there, and then asked us about the water. but DR!Clam-Guy has a lot more purpose, right?
they're standing there just to talk to us, they tell us to "listen up". and they're telling us everything despite how it's apparently irrelevant now- like they know we can go back to previous chapters.
like most_improved_1997 and Jockington and NormalNPC and Donut Guy, it feels like DR!Clam-Guy is undergoing this process of corruption and maybe goner-ization.
like, while they might have been originally a lot more like Undertale's Clam Guy, they're becoming increasingly separate from him.
we only saw DR!Clam-Guy in a single chapter. unlike the other characters i mentioned we're not seeing them transform over time. like Clam Guy's sprite, a retextured version of Clam Girl's, they're a blank slate to be overwritten.
conclusions
i don't think Clam Girl can exist in Undertale. her sprite's already being used, right?
DR!Clam-Guy is weird and messed up. they're a lot like Clam Guy, but they're also distinctly not Clam Guy.
if everyone in the light world had their own, expansive life before the start of the game, then the way DR!Clam-Guy's messed up must be recent- and they've started to become someone else.
i think they've started becoming a goner. the end product of that is becoming Clam Girl. the only Clam Girl, the one from Undertale.
remember too, the "copies are monochrome" thing. it makes a lot of sense with that in mind if Clam Guy loses their identity, becomes just a device for the game to use, and then gets "coloured in", to live a different life.
and to me, it makes sense if Clam Girl was originally from Deltarune. it explains the half-remembering feeling i was talking about earlier.
in summary, my theory is basically this:
UT!Clam-Guy lives in the Underground
for whatever reason so many Undertale characters are in Deltarune, there's a version of Clam Guy in Hometown too
this version of Clam Guy is being corrupted into Clam Girl/Goner
Clam Girl/Goner will end up in Undertale, where she tries to live a normal life and partly forgets her past.
pipis
Pipis' CHECK information feels somewhat like an allusion/metaphor for Clam Girl.
"The Original" An invasive species of freshwater clam.
<number> liked this!
i find it a really funny idea that the clam monsters I've talked about would be "an invasive species", because they're continually moving between worlds and splitting into new characters.
and the characters I've discussed are all vaguely associated with freshwater. Clam Guy wants a drink, DR!Clam Guy hangs out by the lake, Clam Girl's at Waterfall. and the idea of having an "Original" is really important to the ideas I've presented in this post too.
similarly, in Noelle's blog, she talks about how through glitches, Pipis continually duplicated.
What's weird is that the circle seemed to be able to multiply. Normally you need 2 pets to fall in love to make a new pet, but after a while, even if the circle was by itself, a "Congrulations!" message would come up, and then there would be 2 circles.
I'm not certain if the Pipis stuff is intentional at all, but it feels interesting and funny enough to include here anyway.
