Week three of April brought us to the first of two big games I picked for the month. Before I talk about Civolution, a quick word about the other game we played, which isn't pictured here.
I took a flyer on Take A Seat, adding it to another crowdfunding campaign. I'm always interested in games set in entertainment fields and this was an inexpensive add-on. The designers dubbed it a share and write because you have two boards shared between players that you make seat selections on. Your goal is to fill as many seats in your theater as you can, while fulfilling four different goals and going for majorities on the shared boards. It's a fine puzzle but not something we're likely to pull out so we culled it.
Now for the main event. I've been looking for a Civ game practically since we got into the hobby over 15 years ago. We've tried several, none have really worked for me. When I heard Feld was designing a Civ game, I had high hopes because we've enjoyed several of his designs. When people got this, started playing it, and really liked it, my hopes only grew. So, of course, it took us a little while to get it to the table after we bought it. But it was more than worth the wait! This is finally the Civ game for me. So many tracks to progress on (though not all of them are traditional), 16 different actions to choose from, and no extermination (though the three other Xs are here). It's a Feld point salad game with lots of ways to score points, both during the game and at the end. There are just so many things you can do. It was a little overwhelming at first, just trying to get started but we got into the flow. This is a game that will definitely reward multiple plays, as you'll really learn all the actions and how they interact and combine. I'm really looking forward to our next play!
