Description
Anne Hoare, Mrs Richard Hoare (1737-1759) playing a Cittern (after Francis Cotes) by Samuel Woodforde, RA (Ansford 1763 - Ferrara 1817), after 1757. A half-length portrait of a seated woman, looking to the left with a red curtain behind her, playing a cittern. The sitter was the daughter of Henry Hoare II and married her cousin Sir Richard Hoare, 1st Bt who was only created a baronet after her death in 1759. She wears a satin dress embroidered with flowers and elaborately decorated with lace and lace collar.The painting is a copy of the pastel by Francis Cotes (London 1726 - London 1770) in Stourhead House the companion picture of which is dated 1757, a year after her marriage and two years before her death.
Daily Instrument — Cittern
The cittern is a lute from the Renaissance Era based on the Medieval citole. It has a pear shaped wooden body and a metal fretted neck. The instrument has four to six pairs of metal strings that are played with a plectrum and strung over a bridge. The cittern also has tenor and bass variants.

For anyone reading my current Six of Crows Wesper fic, this is a muselar. Historical references to "virginals" can mean any stringed keyboard instrument (e.g., muselars, harpsichords and spinets) and were the predecessors of the pianoforte.
I could have picked "clavichord" to match the vaugely northern European vibe of Kerch but I did not. As is my right.
