Page 1. --- The Residents' Protests Availed Them Not. ---- WILL CONTINUE WORK ---- Council Listened Patiently to Pleadings, Then Decided Pavement Was In Best Interests. ---- The work of laying the asphaltic macadam road on Barrie street will not be stopped. A deputation of property owners from Barrie street waited on Council at its special meeting last night and unavailingly urg- ed on it the cessation of the work on that street. A petition had been received a few days ago from these residents, and after consideration the Board of Works, to which committee it had been sent, recommended that no action be taken on it. This recommendation passed council without a dissenting voice.
A committee of about 15 of the residents of the street waited on council. The spokesmen were Messrs. J. G. Elliott, Capt. Crawford, and W. G. Craig. Mr. Elliott urged that as the road in its present condition was one of the best in the city, the council should leave it alone for a few years at least. He pointed out that while it was not necessary for council to get the consent of the taxpayers before doing anything of this sort he thought that it would have been only fair to get the approval of the property owners on the street before any action had been taken. In view of the fact that the large majority of these property owners were opposed to the pavement he felt that council in order to carry out the wishes of the majority of those interested should stop the work.
Capt. Crawford in a few words pointed out what he considered was the duty of the Council in the matter. He considered that Barrie street in its present condition was good for at least five years, with a little repairing each year, which would not amount to $100. He did not believe that any citizen had the right to block any needed improvement, but it was in considering that the paving of Barrie street was a much needed improvement that the residents took issue with Council. When it was not requested and when over 95 per cent. of the property owners affected protested against it he not believe that Council could otherwise than stop the work. did do The citizens generally were concerned in the matter and should be opposed to it, inasmuch as 70 per cent. of the cost would come out of the general funds, the greater portion of one side of the street being city property. He further pointed out that the city could not have to go far to find a street more in need of the pavement than Barrie street, especially that portion from Union street to King street. He named as an example King street between Clarence and William streets. The condition this street and the upper part of Johnston street he termed as being deplorable. Mr. W. G. Craig also spoke along similar lines.
