So I read The Circle aka first book of the Engelsfors trilogy, and watched the 2015 movie. Linnéa is easily my favorite character (so far) and I had to draw my own version of her!

This is perhaps the saddest moment of The Wicked Ones to me. CĂ©line spent so much of the story thinking about her connection to Downworlders and her childhood feeling of freedom at the Shadow Market, and here she learns that she was never really free. Sneaking out to the Shadow Market wasn't an escape, it just confirmed her weakness in the eyes of strangers. They never welcomed her, they pitied her. It's a great prelude to her eventually overhearing Robert and Stephen mocking her immaturity, as she's gradually forced to realize that even invisibility is too good for her.
It's an interesting parallel to Robert in The Evil We Love, who also lost everything he defined himself by and then turned to Valentine as his last shot at stability. CĂ©line tried to make herself content as a ghost, but if she could only ever be an object of pity then suddenly Valentine recognizing something powerful within her felt even more essential. He wasn't just giving her Stephen, he was giving her someone to be other than "poor CĂ©line Montclaire," and yet after her death she was still only remembered as a tragic little girl who threw her life away for a man who couldn't love her.

There's something deeply tragic in how CĂ©line recognized Stephen giving up core aspects of his identity for Valentine and sought to pick up those qualities in order to make him feel more connected to her, sacrificing herself for Stephen the same way he sacrificed himself for Valentine. In Stephen there's the obvious tragedy of him giving up the things that he loved (mundane culture and eventually Amatis) in service of Valentine, but it's almost worse that CĂ©line never had anything like that to lose. She shaped herself in Stephen's image in a desperate effort to claim his love, and she never gave up anything to do it because she never knew who she was beyond the battered daughter and the wistful schoolgirl.
