It's full of phm crossovers

So I read The Circle aka first book of the Engelsfors trilogy, and watched the 2015 movie. Linnéa is easily my favorite character (so far) and I had to draw my own version of her!

It's an interesting parallel to Robert in The Evil We Love, who also lost everything he defined himself by and then turned to Valentine as his last shot at stability. Céline tried to make herself content as a ghost, but if she could only ever be an object of pity then suddenly Valentine recognizing something powerful within her felt even more essential. He wasn't just giving her Stephen, he was giving her someone to be other than "poor Céline Montclaire," and yet after her death she was still only remembered as a tragic little girl who threw her life away for a man who couldn't love her.

There's something deeply tragic in how Céline recognized Stephen giving up core aspects of his identity for Valentine and sought to pick up those qualities in order to make him feel more connected to her, sacrificing herself for Stephen the same way he sacrificed himself for Valentine. In Stephen there's the obvious tragedy of him giving up the things that he loved (mundane culture and eventually Amatis) in service of Valentine, but it's almost worse that Céline never had anything like that to lose. She shaped herself in Stephen's image in a desperate effort to claim his love, and she never gave up anything to do it because she never knew who she was beyond the battered daughter and the wistful schoolgirl.
