The climber Cissus quadrangularis (veldt grape, devil's backbone) is growing on the wall of the glasshouse corridor of Cambridge Botanic Garden, UK. This plant has 4 angled stems, with conspicuous constrictions at the nodes that produce tendrils, adventitious roots, and ephemeral leaves. The stems and fruit have been used for medicinal purposes since ancient times.

So. I did not realize that dormancy for a cissus discolour meant shedding all their leaves and becoming a collection of sticks. I ended up chopping my mother plant almost fully back and taking the sticks for propagation. Now the sticks have leaves and are thriving but the mother plant is bare... I will probably end up keeping just the propagations.

The coolest thing about this greenhouse was that it wasn’t just rows of plants, it was an actual greenhouse with plants growing absolutely everywhere! Here’s a beautiful cissuss growing on a tree and I think a variegated alocasia.
