Something I've noticed a lot of cis queer people and liberals do is channel their pent up transphobia into non-binary people and drag artists because it's so socially acceptable to be exorsexist in progressive spaces. But obviously, any progressive, any good trans ally should not be transphobic, and anyone with a genuine conscience is not gonna want to look transphobic. But that does mean they're not.
But for many people, their progressiveness and allyship is farcical. They wince at having to use the correct name and pronouns for their binary trans counterparts, because they are transphobic and unwilling to unlearn their biases. So what do they do? They express this transphobia in a socially acceptable way, making memes, posts, comments, videos, jokes, subreddits, trends where the whole point is "critiquing" (making fun of and being exorsexist to) nonbinary people. And these catch long lasting traction too.
The reasoning they make fun of enben for is what leads me to think it is simply just pent up transphobia. Nonbinary people "don't care what others think", our "pronouns are so weird and too hard to get the hang of." We "look so weird, they don't even try to pass." We "are so open about it, always telling people" (conveniently ignoring that gender is omnipresent in this society). We are "not even transitioning properly, if we even do. How can you be really trans if you don't medically transition?" Our chests are too big or too flat to be masculine, feminine, neutral or androgynous. Our identities are just so complex,weird! No non-binary gender is truly serious! Our transitions are too hard to understand! Our surgeries are just mutilative, and cosmetic. And we look so silly, so clocky, so fake! We look so funny, not like real men and women.
Where have you heard those talking points before? But this time, they come from cisgender queers and liberals. Who make so many jokes and say so many things that they wish they could say to binary trans people, but they know it is wrong. They are too scared to own their bigotry. So they express It in exorsexism because they know that it is more socially acceptable, even in progressive spaces. It feels like all round transphobic people looking for an acceptable outlet in progressive spaces, and it's unacceptable.
