Therefore, we have agreed that she was simply abandoned by selfish parents....Cruel lie or not, that story is at least of use to me...Well, I boldly promised her that I would keep her and care for her myself. Oh, she loved that!...I'm a man of my word, lad. I must now, mustn't I?...You don't? Perhaps that's because you have no way with children. Like with adults, you earn their confidence; encourage them to appreciate you. Carefully chosen words, free food and a place to stay? They typically do the trick. A lonely victim today could be a valuable asset tomorrow....Oh, I think for now, I'll give her to Melville. He's been asking for an assistant for awhile anyway...Her name is Agnes."
