What an unusual looking face! Rhopalothrix have differently shaped mandibles than closely related genera and tiny eyes, along with their lumpy face. Although we think they live underground, scientists don't know too much about these mysterious ants, since a live specimen has never been documented. . . . #Rhopalothrix #ciliata #Columbia #ants #formicidaefridays #elpaso411 #itsallgoodep #instaeptx #naturalhistory #museumlife #bugsofinsta #myrmecology https://www.instagram.com/p/BvC3cfrB7Ld/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=7hyh94iomcuv

Protista:  Loxodes sp. Macro photography by Rogelio Moreno G. March 11, 2014 _______________________________
You can think of these guys as protozoa, if you want.  They're protista (single celled organisms) with the kind of cell structure that makes them eukaryotes (like us) and not prokaryotes (like bacteria). But they're not plants, they're not animals, and they're not fungi.
These particular protista are interesting because (1) they have two nuclei (a macronucleus and a micronucleus) and (2) when they divide, only the micronucleus replicates, the big one has to be built from scratch each time. [Ref] _______________________________
