She watched me as I lay,

on my side, curled up

head cradled in one arm,

free hand tucked between my knees.

I was aware but pretended to be asleep.

Slowly she approached,

also acting, pretending

The grasses in her lips were all she needed.

I wondered what this deer was thinking;

Is he dead? Will vultures arrive and expose my secret meadow?

Looking through my eyes now,

I see she stopped pretending.
