Se i Re Normanni avevano rivestito le loro chiese con tessere d’oro , nel 1700, il barocco siciliano fa riempire le pareti delle chiese di marmi intarsiatati, statue affreschi. Entrando in Santa Maria del Gesu, la Casa Professa dei Gesuiti, si è assaliti da un clamore di statue e di marmi, di puttini e dipinti glorificanti l’opera di San Ignazio. Una ricchezza inesauribile che disorienta e intimorisce, proprio come volevano i vecchi gesuiti.
