The thing is: in the legendarium Orion's constellation is linked with Turin, it's a memo for the future. Earendil is the flamifer of westernesse, a herald. And the bearer of hope will announce him.

The other thing: Orion being the husband/lover of eos and "adopting" twin stars. Earendil marries Elwing, who's linked with dawn (she greets him with joy in the sunrise), and they have twins, one destined to mortality one to immortality, night and day if you want. The twins have two daughters: Arwen Undomiel, the evening star, and Tindomiel, the morning star. So, Earendil also shares Orion's family structure. While the role of herald comes from the Lucifer/Venus/Christian association. Tolkien blended it all together. Turin got the darker parts of the myth while Earendil the hopeful ones. Earendil's name is also linked to Sirius, Orion's dog, reinforcing the image of a trustful connection between the characters.
