So, Earendil's name is ethymologically linked to Orion's constellation (Orendil, supposedly the star Rigel). Now, he's also the morning/sunset star (Venus/Lucifer) and in the legendarium he's presented that way. The morning star and the evening one are twin sons of Eos (Orion's wife/lover, but he's not the father of the stars), hold this aside for a moment.
The thing is: in the legendarium Orion's constellation is linked with Turin, it's a memo for the future. Earendil is the flamifer of westernesse, a herald. He will watch the Void until morgoth escapes and the Dagorath begins. He's, among other things then, the herald of the future coming of Turin. They are linked to the same constellation, but Earendil has always been a sign of hope announcing a better future, Turin has no hope, but he will be the ultimate hope for all Arda. And the bearer of hope will announce him.
The other thing: Orion being the husband/lover of eos and "adopting" twin stars. Earendil marries Elwing, who's linked with dawn (she greets him with joy in the sunrise), and they have twins, one destined to mortality one to immortality, night and day if you want. The twins have two daughters: Arwen Undomiel, the evening star, and Tindomiel, the morning star. So, Earendil also shares Orion's family structure. While the role of herald comes from the Lucifer/Venus/Christian association. Tolkien blended it all together. Turin got the darker parts of the myth while Earendil the hopeful ones. Earendil's name is also linked to Sirius, Orion's dog, reinforcing the image of a trustful connection between the characters. That said, Turin and Earendil should be friends, thanks for coming to my ted talk.
Also, Elwing tries to end her life falling into water, just like Nienor, she's also a mirror of the children of Hurin and she gets the hopeful and bittersweet ending. But she too lose her children in a way and in the early versions her husband. They are more similar than it seems
