chuck and bryce as a mage’s apprentice and a knight-in-training, respectively. bryce who is already a spy for the king (?). chuck who doesn’t know his own importance to the king, who doesn’t know the nature of his father’s work for the crown. bryce learns how interested the crown is in chuck becoming a knight, and not just any knight, but a spy more entrenched than bryce can imagine.
chuck isn’t like him. chuck is good.
and the only way bryce can think to save chuck is to make him worse.

he tucks it into his sleeve every time he goes out on a mission.

it was worth it, to bear this pain now, to be cracked apart from the inside out as he watched chuck set his jaw to avoid crying as he pushed past bryce on his way out of their quarters for the last time.
