Mean bean lesbian (affectionately), loyal solange es geht, ohne den ganzen Schuppen niederzubrennen (höhöho u see what i did there), behält Familie und privates erst privat vor Kollegen

I have an opinion regarding the fifth season. There is a particular scene that seems to not have gotten as much focus as I've been putting into it.
Neal puts a mic in Peter's office and overhears a conversation between him and Jones about him.
________
Season 5, Episode 10
Jones "Why did you take Neal to the auction house in the first place?"
Peter "That was a mistake"
Jones "What happens to Neal when you leave?"
Peter "He's the next ASAC's problem"
Jones "You know, because I could-"
Peter "Jones. Don't volunteer to take him on. Trust me, you'll regret it.
_________
All the reaction we see from Neal is staring off into space.
THIS MAN deserved a crash out- at least a private scene. I'm a Neal Caffrey defender in that he is such a good conman, he cons himself on the daily that he's fine and doesn't need anyone but himself [plus Mozzy].
And there is no doubt in my mind that the past 5 years have been the best years of Neal's life, or at the very least the past 3. In season 5 and 6, we got to see him just begin to let his guard down and let people in and imagine a life outside of conning.
He let Peter in. Peter is the one person Neal actually ever trusted, who he risked his life for, risked going back to prison for, risked his freedom for.
Yet Peter still didn't trust him. Didn't trust or think that Neal could actually change and be anything more than a criminal.

Can I analyze one of my favorite White Collar scenes? It's in Whack-A-Mole, the second-to-last episode. Neal is plotting something, and Peter is suspicious, as always. Peter knows they can't really trust each other. They're not really partners; "good anklets make for good partners."
Neal counters, smiling affectionately at Peter: "But I got to say... this has been more fun than a prison sentence has any right to be."
As far as I can tell, Neal is sincere. He is always coldly realistic about his situation-- he's a ward of the state, he doesn't have a choice about working for Peter-- but his friendship with Peter, the way they play with each other and enliven each others days, is genuine. Peter agrees with him, mouthing the word "Yep."
Neal tells Peter, as a soon-to-be father, he needs to learn to give up control.
And then Peter does something really striking-- even though he's just said they aren't really partners, he calls Neal his partner again. And he adds, "Be careful out there," which is a catchphrase from Hill Street Blues, a gritty, realistic police drama from the 80s. It's what the police sergeant would say to close the roll call at the beginning of every episode.
Peter's including Neal on the side of law enforcement-- in his own way, he's saying that he does believe Neal will do the right thing, even without Peter yanking his chain. And Neal says, "Always."
Or to put it another way: Neal pulls out the joy and lightness in Peter, and Peter finds the good in Neal, and even after all they've been though, that's still true.
I’ve recently been reading a lot of White Collar fanfiction, and was surprised by how few crossover fics with Chuck there were, considering Matthew Bomer (actor that plays Neal Caffrey) was in both. But I did manage to dig up a few, so enjoy!
Funerals Bringing Family Together

Summary: Peter’s sister went into Witsec without him knowing. Years later Chuck gets a call about Lisa, Bryce’s mother, passing away. What happens next leads to family members being reveals that no one knew about.
My Comments: The summary above I wrote myself, since the original summary was just dialoge taken directly from the fic, which doesn’t really work for a rec list. I absolutely love the found family member trope, not to mention the whole concept of Peter and Neal actually being related, and tying Chuck into the mix is just amazing. This short little read will leave you aching for more, but it is still worth the time.

The Mirror Shows Not

Summary: The day Neal Caffrey walked into his apartment to find Chuck Bartowski sitting at his table, he knew he was in trouble.
My Comments: This is an unfinished fic that was last updated over a decade ago, so it most definitely is abandoned. But despite that I still absolutely love it. The drama of Chuck and Sarah trying to convince Neal/Bryce to rejoin the CIA is delightful. Not to mention a nosy Peter just makes for a treat. I absolutely think that this fic is worth your time despite being abandoned.

False Faces Verse

Summary: An unexpected connection to the criminal of the week causes another crack in Neal's façade.
My Comments: The summary above is partially taken from the second fic in this series. I love this series and all the identity drama that comes with it. This is a three part series, with that last fic in the series only has one chapter left to be posted. Despite the last update being in 2024, the author has recently said that they do plan to continue this. This is by far one of my favorite crossovers and I know it will be yours too!!
