Balloons and Birthdays
₍ᐢ.ˬ.⑅ᐢ₎
It had been a while since Minho had hoped to fall in love again. First, because for him, loving was too painful. He had suffered too much in his past relationships and could no longer bear the way men had treated him. Being gay was already challenging enough, but being gay in Korea seemed even more complicated in his eyes. When he realized that he would never fit into the mold society had set for him, Minho gave up on the idea of finding love or ever meeting someone who would complete him. Instead, he focused on other things that had become more important in his life, like his friends, who meant a great deal to him, and his cats, who were the most important to him. He also loved his work, and after opening his own café in Seoul, he found happiness in the routine he followed every day.
That morning, as he was woken up by his cats climbing on him, Minho wrapped himself in his blanket to sleep a bit more. Soon after, his alarm went off, which he snoozed several times to enjoy his morning longer—until he heard his phone ringing and let out a groan before grabbing it to answer.
“What?” he asked groggily, his voice still rough, and he heard Hyunjin laughing on the other end of the line.
“Still sleeping? Just a reminder, it’s Jisung’s birthday, and you promised him an amazing cake!” Hyunjin said, and Minho rolled his eyes.
“You should spoil your boyfriend a bit less, or he’ll end up chubbier than me!” Minho replied as he got out of bed to make himself breakfast, his cats following as usual.
“He’ll look even more adorable to me then. But seriously, everything will be ready for tonight at the café, right?” Hyunjin asked, his voice almost trembling, and Minho understood that he was still nervous about messing things up.
“The café is ready, it’s reserved just for him, everything’s fine. Come when you’re ready. Felix said he’d come to help me with Chan. Dress up nicely, and we’ll be waiting for you,” he replied, trying to reassure him as he started preparing his cats’ food.
“Thank you, Min… Oh, and Jisung invited his friend Changbin to come; they’re working together now,” Hyunjin added, sounding more relaxed.
“Don’t worry about it; there’s more than enough food,” Minho said with a laugh, and Hyunjin laughed too before hanging up. Minho sat in his kitchen, having his breakfast while his cats ate alongside him.
Today was a special day. Normally, on Sundays, he opened the café later and enjoyed a slower morning. But since it was Jisung’s birthday, he had decided to reserve it for the celebration with his friends. Last year, Hyunjin had tried to find a place Jisung would love, but they had all ended up in their apartment with not enough food or space to dance or sit, leaving Hyunjin regretting it and promising Jisung to do better the following year—a promise he was now fulfilling. Minho got up and went to the bathroom to get ready. As he brushed his teeth, he looked at himself in the mirror and let out a small sigh. Even though it had been a joke on the phone, he’d noticed that, over the years of being single, his body had changed; he’d aged, and the pounds had piled on too easily, especially working near pastries. He stepped into the shower, running his hands over his body, feeling the curves that had recently formed—his slight love handles, his thicker thighs and hips, and the way his belly jiggled slightly when he walked. However, despite these changes, Minho had never questioned his body and liked the fact that he embraced this new side of himself. After all, he was the only one who truly loved him.
The morning passed faster than he had expected, and when he arrived at the café, he began setting up the tables and creating a space for dancing, adding the decorations Hyunjin had given him the night before. Minho had suggested setting up the decorations while Hyunjin took Jisung shopping for the day so they could spend some time together. Minho hung large “27” balloons on the wall and smiled as he thought about his own age, grimacing slightly. He then heard the café door open and turned to see Felix, who was making faces while listening to Chan talk.
“You’re wrong; Jisung definitely prefers chocolate cakes,” Felix said, rolling his eyes, and Chan frowned.
“We all know he loves cheesecakes; you can’t go wrong with that, Lixie,” Minho smiled as he watched them approach before Felix asked him to settle the matter.
“We have chocolate cheesecakes, and I made a chocolate cake. Jisung prefers anything with chocolate, but what I think he’d like best is for you two to stop arguing and help me with these decorations,” he said, pointing to the remaining decorations, and Felix grimaced before getting to work. Minho let them handle it and went to the back to check on the cakes and ensure the food was ready. He pulled out the boxes he had prepared the day before, setting them up on the tables and starting to arrange the buffet in his own quiet way, until the sound of the door opening caught his attention again, and he looked up to see a man he had never met before. Felix bounded over to him and gave him a hug before leading him over to Minho. Minho felt himself blushing without knowing why as he looked at him. His dark, curly hair fell over his forehead, and his round cheeks gave him a youthful appearance. He was shorter than Felix, with a round belly, and Minho swallowed as they stopped in front of him.
“This is Changbin, Jisung’s friend. He’s here to help us—hope that’s okay?” Felix asked with an angelic smile.
“N-no… of course not. Nice to meet you, I’m Minho,” he said, blushing and bowing slightly.
“I know,” Changbin replied with a smile before Chan called him over. Minho watched him go, replaying his words in his mind.
He knew? How did he know? Had Jisung mentioned him? Maybe Felix had told him who he was, or… Minho felt his cheeks grow even warmer and shook his head, returning to the buffet setup. He took a deep breath, trying to appear relaxed even though Changbin’s presence made him strangely want to keep looking at him and walk over to him. But he regained his focus and finished his preparations.
The day continued in much the same way, with Seungmin and Jeongin eventually joining to help Minho finish the setup, while Seungmin teased him a bit about his weight gain, as he usually did. When the sun began to set, they turned on the decorations and waited for Hyunjin to arrive with Jisung. Minho had gone back to the kitchen to get the drinks from the fridge when Changbin joined him, and he stopped suddenly in surprise at seeing him there, blushing again as Changbin helped him carry the bottles.
“It’s amazing what you’re doing for Jisung; he’s lucky to have friends like you,” Changbin said, setting down the bottles Minho had been holding on the table. Minho felt the warmth of Changbin’s hand on his own and blushed again.
“Uh…yeah, we’re just doing our best, but Hyunjin deserves most of the thanks,” Minho said, looking away.
“It’s not Hyunjin who made all this food,” Changbin said with a smile.
“Trust me, he’s put more effort into today than any of us to make sure Jisung has the best day of his life… By the way, earlier, you said you knew who I was… how?” Minho asked, biting his lip.
“Jisung showed me photos of his friends, and I never forget a beautiful face,” Changbin said, taking the bottles and leaving the kitchen. Minho froze for a moment, speechless, his heart pounding. He felt his lungs fill, and he quickly ran his hands under cold water to cool down before going back into the main room, where he saw Jisung and Hyunjin arriving just as everyone shouted SURPRISE! Jisung looked at them all in shock before turning to Minho and lightly tapping his shoulder.
“Why are you perfect?” Jisung asked, pouting before starting to cry, and Minho laughed as he watched him. Hyunjin wrapped Jisung in a hug, and everyone stepped forward to wish him a happy birthday, each taking turns embracing him.
“You guys are silly… I wasn’t expecting this…” Jisung said, pouting again as Seungmin raised his eyebrows.
“You’re the one who invited me, aren’t you?” he asked, and Jisung rolled his eyes.
“Let me pretend it’s a surprise party! You’re no fun, Kim Seungmin. Besides, I definitely didn’t expect you to put balloons with my face on them!” Jisung pointed at the balloons behind them, and Jeongin beamed with pride at his idea.
After Jisung finished thanking everyone, they turned on the music and began enjoying the party. The evening went by quickly, with plenty of food and drinks to keep everyone happy—some gathering by the buffet or the bar, others dancing or sitting and chatting, just like Minho was doing with Hyunjin. However, despite Hyunjin’s words of gratitude for all he had done, Minho couldn’t take his eyes off Changbin. His gaze lingered on Changbin’s round belly pushing against his shirt, his thick thighs rubbing together as he danced, the way his double chin appeared when he smiled, and the way he ate what Minho had prepared with such enjoyment, making little noises of satisfaction as he chewed. Minho swallowed, snapping back to reality as he noticed Hyunjin watching him and following his gaze to Changbin.
“You like him, don’t you?” Hyunjin asked suddenly. Minho froze for a moment; Hyunjin might not be the smartest of his friends, but he was definitely the most perceptive.
“What? No… We barely know each other,” Minho said, shaking his head.
“Not knowing someone has never stopped you from going further,” Hyunjin said with a smile, and Minho recalled just how confident he could be when he went out clubbing to meet people for one-night stands. He nodded, grabbed a shot glass, filled it, clinked it with Hyunjin’s, and downed it in one go. Standing up, he walked over to Changbin, slid an arm around his waist, and pulled him closer to dance. Changbin let himself be drawn in, smiling as he wrapped his arms around Minho. Minho led him to the dance floor, where they started moving their bodies slowly against each other, keeping their lips just a few centimeters apart, almost daring themselves not to kiss. But then Changbin closed the gap, pressing his lips to Minho’s. Minho didn’t hesitate, capturing Changbin’s lips in his own and starting to devour him tenderly, tasting a mix of alcohol and the pastries Changbin must have eaten just before. His lips were surprisingly soft, his body plush, and Minho’s hand wandered over his curves, reaching up to his soft cheeks. He drew Changbin even closer, losing himself in their kiss, and without realizing how, or understanding why, when he opened his eyes again, he felt a headache pounding. He sat up with difficulty in his bed as Soonie jumped onto him.
Minho frowned, rubbing his face with his hand as he tried to replay the night’s events in his head. When he felt something shift next to him, he was surprised to see Changbin sleeping shirtless beside him. Suddenly, memories flooded back—the party, the kiss, the alcohol, more kisses, then returning to his place, their night together, Changbin’s body pressed against his, the passion. It all hit him like a bomb, and he started to panic until Changbin stirred, moving closer and resting his head on Minho’s legs, wrapping his arms around him.
“You’re not leaving, right?” he asked, still half-asleep, and Minho smiled tenderly, running a hand over his back.
“Don’t you want breakfast?” Minho asked softly, keeping his voice low.
“Dating a baker means I’ll just get fatter, doesn’t it?” Changbin said, opening his eyes, and Minho laughed.
“Probably,” Minho replied, pressing his lips to Changbin’s before getting up, slipping on his pajamas, and heading to the kitchen, making sure to fill his cats’ bowls on the way.
He could hardly believe it—it was the first time in months that a man had stayed over, and this one felt oddly perfect. He’d been gentle with him, kind, and he trusted Jisung’s knack for meeting the right people, unlike himself. Minho started preparing pancakes so they could have breakfast together, and as he flipped a pancake, he felt arms wrapping around him from behind, a soft belly pressing against his back. Smiling, he turned to see Changbin.
“Did you sleep well?” Minho asked, running a hand through Changbin’s hair to see his face.
“It was one of the best nights I’ve ever had.” Minho blushed, turning back to the stove to focus on breakfast.
“Go ahead and sit down; I’m almost done.” Changbin took a seat, and Dori hopped onto his lap, rubbing against him, surprising Minho—she was usually shy with strangers. Smiling, he watched as Changbin petted the cat. Minho placed a plate filled with pancakes in front of Changbin, along with another plate on the chair across from him, and set out all kinds of toppings so he could choose what he liked best. Sitting down across from him, Minho watched as Changbin started to eat, letting out a soft moan that filled Minho with a strange warmth.
“You’re really talented, you know… damn… that’s really good,” Changbin said as he kept eating his pancakes, covered in whipped cream, chocolate, and caramel.
“Well, I’m good at my job then,” Minho replied, smiling.
“Is it bad if I say I want to eat your food forever?” Changbin asked timidly.
“Is it bad if I want to feed you forever?” Minho asked, smiling, and this time, it was Changbin who blushed before shaking his head and going back to his food.
Minho smiled, too, understanding that while this meeting might have been fast and impulsive, he couldn’t hide what he felt inside and the chemistry that had settled so naturally between them, as simple as breathing. Talking with Changbin felt natural, and his body craved the closeness. Minho got up and moved his chair next to Changbin’s, resting his head on his shoulder and running his hand over his soft belly.
“You look so perfect… I love your body,” Minho murmured, pressing his face into Changbin’s neck, leaving kisses there.
“You’re making me horny while I’m eating? You’re playing a dangerous game,” Changbin said, turning his face toward him and capturing his lips in a kiss. Minho kept caressing Changbin’s belly, holding it in his hands and gently massaging it, a small smile on his lips. “Let me help you, too,” Changbin said, taking a spoonful and feeding it to Minho, who ate it with a smile. Changbin’s hands moved to Minho’s belly as well, and Minho blushed, realizing he was no longer used to someone seeing his body without the filter of alcohol. Yet Changbin looked at him hungrily, caressing him tenderly. Minho let him, letting out a soft moan, feeling his cheeks heat up.
“Oh, so you like it too?” Changbin teased with a small smile, and Minho nodded gently, taking a bite of cake that Changbin held in his hands. He ran his tongue slowly over Changbin’s fingers, and Changbin leaned in, pressing his lips to Minho’s, mixing his breath with his own. Just as he finished his bite, Changbin’s tongue slipped into his mouth, and Minho surrendered entirely, diving into this moment of pleasure and tenderness that he shared with Changbin. He knew he wouldn’t be letting him go anytime soon and was ready to dive into this new world with him.

Minho entered the kitchen, slipping his hands around Changbin’s back to pull him close, feeling his soft body press against his, with their cats weaving around their legs and meowing, asking for their share of food too.
“Cooking for me? What’s the occasion?” Minho asked, kissing his cheek softly.
“Who said it’s for you?” Changbin replied, turning toward him with a laugh, and Minho smiled.
“Oh, I know you’re a big boy; you need to keep eating well,” Minho teased, running his hands over Changbin’s belly, now the largest part of his body and, according to Minho, the most enjoyable to touch.
“You’re growing too, babe… wasn’t it you who just split another pair of pants?” Changbin teased back, and Minho rolled his eyes.
“Whatever, what are you making?” he asked, looking over the pots and pans in front of him.
“I wanted to do something nice for you. You’ve been taking good care of me lately, and I’ll admit, the idea of feeding you all evening isn’t exactly unappealing to me either,” Changbin replied, blushing, and Minho smiled.
“Then I’ll let you feed me. After all, I still have a long way to go if I want to catch up with you.”
