Mr Chrome! as a silly witch getting into Yule could you tell us some info of what we should know or what to read to learn more on how to celebrate properly ^^
i would preface this by saying that i don’t consider myself a witch, rather i am just called to worship certain gods, so if you’re looking for general witch stuff, i may not have the best advice, nor would i consider what im telling you “advice” per se.
yule (aka the winter solstice) is the darkest day of the year for most people in the northern hemisphere, after which the days start getting longer again until the summer solstice (liða) in late june. i focus on the return of the sun, and with it, hope - but there’s no “proper” way to celebrate. everyone finds different meaning in yule but here are the things i do to get in the spirit:
some things i reflect on:
- what brings me hope? what reminds me that things are going to get better?
- what am i grateful for? what keeps my spirits warm during the long nights?
- what have brought me meaning this year? what do i hope for in the new year?
- what have i grieved this year? how do i make room for it in my heart while still moving forward?
some symbols i personally include:
- anything related to the sun (oranges, candles, the color red)
- anything related to life (especially evergreen branches)
some people do yule logs (in the fireplace), i personally don’t bc i don’t have access to that kinda wood, but i do set out a whole temporary altar and pray to a host of gods, obviously fenrir, but also freya, and sunne.
- i give what i can (usually in the form of donations, education, or volunteer hours)
- i spend time with my family and loved ones, especially checking in on those i don’t speak to often
- i pray a lot, cry a lot, laugh a lot, eat a lot (hence the aforementioned menu) and drink a lot.
- i’m considering veiling this year as well
- one of my buddies gave me the idea to write holiday letters to folks who are spending the holidays in the psych ward, so that’s going to be something i try to do this year also.
- i set a lot of shit on fire. i have always found meaning in fire, in burning, changing, etc etc.
i hope that’s a good starting point!
i hope something good happens to you today!
