It's just, creators DO tend to read the tags for the things they help create. Greg most certainly did read the Young Justice tag throughout the show's run, and logging on and seeing a whole bunch of "FUCK YOU" all the time - well that's a really weird message to get as a creator. Regardless of how you mean it. (Hal actually had to explain to Greg that "FUCK YOU" in the context of tumblr is not necessarily a personal insult. It was news to him. He thought everyone had been pissed off at him.)
Iâm genuinely sorry if anyone involved in production for the series believed the post was aimed at them. It wasnât. I can understand why creators might keep track of tags for projects theyâre involved in, but posts made using the tagging system are primarily going to be by and for fans reaching out to one another, expressing their own thoughts/opinions and reactions to a seriesâoften spontaneously, and without a lot of deliberation beforehand. Like you said, web communities like Tumblr often develop their own, familiarized norms for posting, some of which areâŚdecidedly more tasteful than others.
Iâm obviously not arguing my own post was classy shit; it wasnât. It was rude, hyperbolic, and vulgar. But it also wasnât written about, or for, Greg Weisman, nor for any other creator(s) related to the Young Justice series. If any series creators did find and read that postâeither through the showâs tracked tags, or circulating on their own dashboardsâthatâs incidental. Anyone could find it, read it, reblog it. Plenty of creators have their own websites, blogs, and forums where they can receive messages from fans. Getting an angry/rude/vulgar-sounding message through those specific avenues is not the same thing as finding one on an open website, where people can pretty much put their content/opinions out there at a momentâs notice for the internet to see. The tags are are for everyone, and even the most creator-involved fandoms will rarely be conscientious of creators themselves when they post about a series, or reblog related posts from other people. The post in question has 400 notes now and counting, as of this writing, and I would bet that a solid 98% of those came from people that saw the quote and reacted solely with feelings related to the characters of Dick Grayson and Jason Toddânot at all about the real-life person Greg Weisman who produced their story, and wrote out that tidbit of information regarding their friendship and closeness in YJ. Creators can take away whatever message they find in posts like that, when they see them, and theyâre entitled to react and respond, but that doesnât mean itâs for them. Iâm sorry if the message crossed a line.
