Hi! I’m writing a story where the older brother of my character is Deaf (born deaf) and I’m curious on how to write them signing to each other/ other family members. I’ve seen some people say to write it as it’s spoken (gloss) and others say to write it how a hearing person would speak just with more expressiveness from the person who’s signing. I just want to do as much research as possible so I don’t get anything wrong or offend anyone!
Hello,
writing sign language is kinda complicated, because sign languages work in 3D spaces which is impossible to capture in 2D text.
Usually, the best way is to “translate” what they are saying, so in English (or the language your story is in) and use some way to make it clear to the reader you are translating. So “he signed” or “she said in sign language” or “their hands moved animatedly, as they told me the story of their day”. Some writers also use cursive and/or * or some other way of making it clear.
You should NOT try to copy the way sign languages are noted down in textbooks for learning purposes. No “YOUR NAME WHAT” or “TOMORROW MY BIRTHDAY I EXCITED.” This way of noting down sign languages is a helping tool for people to learn the correct word order in sign language or for linguistic purposes, but it should not be used in fiction writing.
Readers generally lack context and this way of writing down sign language gives them a bad idea about the language itself. Sign languages are poetic, rich languages, we don’t want them to look like “TARZAN ME JANE YOU”.
